The fourth is always different

Hecate or Hekate (/ˈhɛkətiː, ˈhɛkɪt/; Greek Ἑκάτη, Hekátē) is a goddess in Greek religion and mythology, most often shown holding two torches or a key[1] and in later periods depicted in triple form. She was variously associated with crossroads, entrance-ways, dogs, light, the moon, magic, witchcraft, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, ghosts, necromancy, and sorcery.[2][3] In the post-Christian writings of the Chaldean Oracles (2nd–3rd century CE) she was regarded with (some) rulership over earth, sea and sky, as well as a more universal role as Saviour (Soteira), Mother of Angels and the Cosmic World Soul.[4][5] She was one of the main deities worshiped in Athenian households as a protective goddess and one who bestowed prosperity and daily blessings on the family.[6]

Depictions of both a single form Hekate and triple formed, as well as occasional four headed descriptions continued throughout her history.

The Sixteen Defilements of Mind
Cactus“Defilements of the mind” (cittassa upakkilesa): When explaining the mental defilements, why did the Blessed One mention greed first? Because it arises first. For with all beings wherever they arise, up to the level of the (Brahma heaven of the) Pure Abodes, it is first greed that arises by way of lust for existence (bhava-nikanti). Then the other defilements will appear, being produced according to circumstances. The defilements of mind, however, are not limited to the sixteen mentioned in this discourse. But one should understand that, by indicating here the method, all defilements are included. The following additional defilements can be mentioned: fear, cowardice, shamelessness and lack of scruples, insatiability, evil ambitions, etc.
abhijjha-visama-lobha: covetousness and unrighteous greed
byapada: ill will
kodha: anger
upanaha: hostility or malice
makkha: denigration or detraction; contempt
palasa: domineering or presumption
issa: envy
macchariya: jealousy, or avarice; selfishness
maya: hypocrisy or deceit
satheyya: fraud
thambha: obstinacy, obduracy
sarambha: presumption or rivalry; impetuosity
mana: conceit
atimana: arrogance, haughtiness
mada: vanity or pride
pamada: negligence or heedlessness; in social behavior, this leads to lack of consideration.
The sixteen defilements are finally abandoned by the noble paths (or stages of sanctity) in the following order:
By the path of stream-entry (sotapatti-magga) are abandoned: (5) denigration, (6) domineering, (7) envy, (8) jealousy, (9) hypocrisy, (10) fraud.
By the path of non-returning (anagami-magga): (2) ill will, (3) anger, (4) malice, (16) negligence.
By the path of Arahatship (arahatta-magga): (1) covetousness and unrighteous greed, (11) obstinacy, (12) presumption, (13) conceit, (14) arrogance, (15) vanity.
It may be asked why the Buddha had given this simile of the soiled cloth. He did so to show that effort brings great results. A cloth soiled by dirt that is adventitious (i.e., comes from outside; agantukehi malehi), if it is washed can again become clean because of the cloth’s natural purity. But in the case of what is naturally black, as for instance (black) goat’s fur, any effort (of washing it) will be in vain. Similarly, the mind too is soiled by adventitious defilements (agantukehi kilesehi). But originally, at the phases of rebirth (consciousness) and the (sub-conscious) life-continuum, it is pure throughout (pakatiya pana sakale pi patisandhi-bhavanga-vare pandaram eva). As it was said (by the Enlightened One): ‘This mind, monks, is luminous, but it becomes soiled by adventitious defilements’ (AN 1.49). But by cleansing it one can make it more luminous, and effort therein is not in vain.

Asavas
Stranded BoatThe asavas are cankers of:
(1) sense-pleasure (kāmāsava)
(2) existence [becoming] (bhavāsava)
(3) false views (diṭṭhāsava)
(4) ignorance (avijjāsava)
Description
The word ‘canker’ suggests something that corrodes or corrupts slowly. These two figurative meanings attempt to describe facets of the concept of āsava: such as being kept long in storage; oozing out; or taint, corroding (Padmasiri De Silva, An Introduction to Buddhist Psychology, Rowman & Littefield, 2000).
In other words, the term āsava can be described as mental effluent, pollutant, or fermentation. It comprises four qualities – sensuality, views, becoming, and ignorance – that “flow out” of the mind and create the flood of the round of death and rebirth – that is, these mental biases or cankers keep one bound to the world of samsāra (A Glossary of Pali and Buddhist Terms found at http://www.accesstoinsight.org/glossary.html).
Furthermore, asava is a malignant defilement of the mind that arrests its spiritual progress towards complete liberation. It oozes out, like water oozing out from tiny holes in a pot of water, through the unlocked doors of the six senses. Like a person, who under the influence of liquor, loses their normal sense and commits various offences against society, even so under the influence of this poisonous drug, a person loses all sense of shame and fear, and acts in a manner detrimental to their own welfare as well as the welfare of others. As mentioned earlier, it lengthens samsaric existence with all the suffering inherent in it. The destruction of the cankers has to be done by one’s own efforts. The Buddha has shown the way to do it. Mere belief in a supernatural being, and the false sense of security and salvation in that belief, will never help; nor will matted hair or a tiger’s skin dress. The Blessed One pithily puts it in verse 394 of the Dhammapada: “What avails thee of thy matted hair, O fool? What of the dress of tiger’s skin? Within thee is full of defilements, why cleanest thou the outside?” (T.H. Perera, The Four Cankers (Asava), Buddhist Publication Society, 1967).
Perera further describes the asavas as follows:
Sensuality
This means the desire for sensual pleasures. Sensuality is twofold: the desire to enjoy the delightful and pleasurable things found in the sentient sphere of existence, and the objects that induce sensual enjoyment, namely: the desire for sights, the desire for sounds, the desire for smell, the desire for taste, and the desire for tangibles. Beings intoxicated with the enjoyment of these sense objects, lose all sense of proportion and behave like lunatics, and chase after these sense objects to enjoy them ad libitum. Insatiate are their desires, now here, now there, seeking after more pleasures in pastures new. At the moment of death, their minds, stupefied with sense-desires, provide these sense-indulgers with a new mind-form in one of the less than desirable planes of existence.
Existence
This is the desire for continued or eternal existence, either in the form-world or formless world. This is the so-called eternity belief of the theists who hold the belief in an eternal soul. In contradistinction to the eternity belief is the belief in self-annihilation in which the soul is annihilated at death, and as a result there is no life after death. This is the doctrine maintained by the materialists. The Buddha rejected both these beliefs and taught the Middle Way, based on the natural law of cause and effect, or kamma, action-reaction. It must be clearly understood that kamma is the volitional act and its result or reaction (vipāka) follows the act. The principle involved is good begets good; bad or evil begets bad or evil.
False View
The Brahmajāla Sutta or the Discourse on the Supreme Net (Dīgha Nikāya Sutta 1) gives us a list of 62 beliefs current in the time of the Buddha. These beliefs are compared to a net in which beings are caught and made to run hither and thither and from which no escape is possible. Such is the fate of all mortals who are infected with the canker of false beliefs. For example, the “spirit of God”, this Soul, this Ego, this Divine Spark, this Eternal Entity forms the central core of all theistic faiths. It is chiefly because of this belief that the Buddha calls the third impediment to Sainthood the canker of false beliefs, upon which clings the eternity belief and the belief in annihilation.
Ignorance
The conspicuous characteristic of a taint is to corrupt or to infect or to eat into an object, be it physical or mental. In this sense the canker of ignorance eats into man’s moral fibre and debilitates his mind to such an extent as to make him consider evil as good; the unpleasant as pleasant; the impermanent as permanent; the unreal as real; soullessness as the soul and so forth, and thereby he succumbs to acts of cruelty, killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, etc., which, at death, condition a woeful existence.
Conclusion

http://buddhist-spirituality.com/…/asavas-mental-defilements

The entirety of the Buddha-Dhamma is devoted to the task of eliminating ignorance (avijjā) or darkness and enthroning knowledge (vijjā) or light. We have been, and are being, chained to the Wheel of Life (samsara) because of ignorance or darkness; until that glorious awakening when we, in the full glow of knowledge or light, shall penetrate the Four Noble Truths: this is Suffering; this is the Origin of Suffering; this is the Cessation of Suffering; this is the Path leading to the Cessation of Suffering, and thus put an end for ever to this sorrow-fraught process of being born, decaying and dying. Then, and only then, shall we make our final bow, our final farewell to samsaric existence or becoming.

AROUND THE TIME OF CHRISTIANITY GREEKS WERE SAYING THAT THERE WAS ONE GOD AND THAT GOD WAS ZEUS---- ZEUS WAS REPRESENTED BY THE NUMBER 4 (and this person argues the line in the four is the crescent moon)

THE SWASTIKA

https://bookheathen.wordpress.com/2014/10/16/the-legend-of-the-su-asti/

(adapted from my novel The Dark Side of the Fylfot. Fourteen-year-old Gretl is eager to hear the story behind the talisman her grandfather wears at his throat)

Swastika_iran2

‘Jemshid, son of Tahmuras, ruled Persia for seven hundred years. He was a wise and just monarch, skilled in forging weapons, weaving fine cloths, and shaping ornaments from silver and gold. They say he discovered medicine and knew cures for all the sicknesses suffered by the people of his country. His most valued possession was a seven-ringed cup, one ring for each of the planets, a gift of the gods, in which he was able to see the whole world, past, present and future.

‘King Jemshid had two daughters, whom he loved equally, and spoiled equally with lavish gifts. Their names were Shahrinaz and Arnawaz. Both were beautiful in their own way; but whereas Shahrinaz had fair skin and golden hair, Arnawaz had a complexion and hair as dark as a starless night.

‘When the girls were sixteen, Jemshid gave each of them the most wonderful present of all – a gold necklace made by his own hand. On each gold chain hung a talisman of well-being – one of the su-asti, crosses on which each of the four arms was bent at right angles. To Shahrinaz he presented the cross with arms bent to the right. In its centre was engraved the emblem of the sun god, Ormazd. To her sister he presented the left-handed cross, which carried the engraving of a crescent moon, symbol of Ahriman, god of darkness. For Jemshid honoured both gods and was afraid of offending either.

‘As it happened, the adjacent country was ruled by a prince named Zohak, who had been tricked by a demon into murdering his father and stealing his throne. Zohak was determined to seize the throne of Persia too and, at the head of a huge army, crossed her borders. King Jemshid was a proud man, blinded by his love and by his daughters’ charms. He took no account of their different characters. A seventh part of his magic cup was dark and he did not see the danger until it was too late. Because Zohak was handsome, Arnawaz fell in love with him and came under his influence. She conspired with him to kill her father so that she could become queen herself.

‘Whereas Jemshid had been a just ruler, Zohak used magic to oppress the people, and they lived in fear of him. On his shoulder and that of his queen, where once they were kissed by Lord Ahriman, grew two black snakes that consumed human brains, and each day the pair offered two of their subjects as sacrifice to these monsters. As for Arnawaz, because she wore the emblem of the dark god round her neck, she held the real power in the kingdom and through her Zohak ruled for a thousand years.

‘Shahrinaz was determined to avenge her father. She was patient, and prayed to Ormazd to help her.

‘The sun god answered. “Is light not always greater than darkness? When the sun rises, does not the moon flee? You already have the means to lift the shadow of your sister from the land. She is Ahriman’s creature, and cannot bear the sunshine. Take the su-asti, the cross your father gave you, and go to the palace. Hold my image in front of your sister, so that the daylight is reflected upon it, and the power of the one she wears will be broken. Then you will see Arnawaz as she really is.”

‘Shahrinaz hesitated. “And what of Zohak? Even if my sister is destroyed, he is still king.”

‘ “His time will come,” answered Ormazd. “I have chosen your son, Faridan, to be the instrument of his fate.”

‘Shahrinaz protested. “My son is just a child!”

‘ “Have faith,” answered the god. “He will grow. When Arnawaz is no more, give him the su-asti so that he will be protected from evil, and can accomplish the task I shall set for him.’

‘Shahrinaz did as she was asked. When she held up the su-asti of the sun, Arnawaz screamed in terror and her human form shrivelled up until all that remained was a black serpent. Then Shahrinaz said to her, “Because you were once my sister, I will spare your life, but from today you are banished from human company. Crawl away to the desert, to the wild places of the earth where you belong.”

‘When Faridan was sixteen, Shahrinaz placed the cross of Ormazd around his neck. “Now you are ready to fulfil your destiny,” she said. “Go and break forever the power of Zohak. Lift the shadow of fear from the people and restore justice to the land.

‘ “But remember! Because the su-asti was a present to me from my father Jemshid, and because I now give it to you, it should always be passed from father to daughter and from mother to son, down through the generations.

‘ “And tell your children this: the su-asti of the sun god will protect them as long as they do not allow evil into their hearts. For, should that happen, it will be as if they wore the left-hand cross of Arnawaz.

‘ “Goodness will be despised, and the creatures of the night will rule again in the world!” ‘

THEY WERE QUADRANTS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Aggersborg_Viking_Castle.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viking_ring_fortress

I discussed that archaeologists say that Israelite houses were comprised of four sections in the form of a quadrant called four room houses

A Viking ring fortress is a type of circular fort of a special design, built by the Vikings in the Viking Age. They are also known as Trelleborgs. All Trelleborgs have a strictly circular shape, with roads and gates pointing in the four cardinal directions. These common structures are sometimes partially encircled by advanced ramparts, but these additions are not always circular.

It had "perfectly circular with gates opening to the four corners of the earth, and a courtyard divided into four areas which held large houses set in a square pattern.

Viking ring fortresses were in the shapes of quadrants.

She adds the fourth transcendent one

(Marlowe & Co./Avalon Publishing May 2004)

Although I have been passionately devoted to the Many Splendored Goddess in her complex multiplicity for more than thirty years now, I am not a believer in the Triple Goddess paradigm. It has never resonated with me because it belies what I believe to be the true nature of nature. The Triple Goddess in her tripartite phases is widely understood to represent the complete cyclical wholeness of life. She Who is Three is likened to the moon, the tides, and the seasons, whose mutability She mirrors. And therein, lies the rub.

I am sorry, but thirty years of researching, teaching, and writing about Celestially Auspicious Occasions -- the cycles of the cosmos and the earthly seasons, and the multi-cultural ritual expressions that they inspire -- I can state unequivocally that the moon has four quarters, not three, and that there are, as well, four seasons in the year.

For millennia, the three faces of the Triple Goddess have, in fact, accurately reflected the stages of women’s lives -- the developing youth, the nurturing mother and the wise old woman. She still corresponds with the real life expectancy and experience of most women in the world even today who live pretty much as they always have. The reality of their existence dictates that they grow quickly through girlhood into early and prolonged maternity then, if they are lucky enough to survive multiple childbirths and general poverty, they pass through menopause directly into old age.

Photographs of my own grandmother when she was younger than I am now, picture a matronly looking lady with the Old Worldly stately countenance of a grandmother, a bubby, an abuela -- a full decade before I was born. Part of her elderly appearance is purely the style of the period, the rest a reflection of her hard life and times.

While certainly there is still much to learn from these models, the old triple-header construct is no longer all-inclusive. It doesn’t include a description of my life or the lives of other contemporary women in their middle years living in modern developed countries. It does not address our issues and needs, nor does it embrace our unique and unprecedented position in society. It does not even recognize our existence. The old stereotypes simply do not apply to us.

We have outgrown our tenure as Maidens and as Mothers, yet old age no longer follows immediately after menopause, which is why so many midlife women don’t see ourselves (yet) as Crones. Where is the authentic archetype for us? There are now, for the first time in herstory and history combined, entire multi-national generations of women for whom the Triple Goddess paradigm no longer resonates. For us -- nearly 50 million climacteric women in the United States alone -- the tri-level ideal is flawed.

Folk tales and historical documents featuring positive depictions of powerful middle age female figures are few and far between. There is no codified body of literature to which we can turn for affirmative examples of profound and potent midlife. Real life role models are sparse, as well, although there certainly have always been, in every society, notable and remarkable exceptions — powerful middle aged women who were rulers, adventurers, artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, spiritual leaders -- mature, glamorous, and courageous sheroes of all stripes. The popular media has typically portrayed menopausal women as over-the-hill, overwrought, flakes or furies, completely undesirable in either case.

So who are we supposed to be? And who can teach us how? We occupy a truly unique position, poised on the brink of uncharted waters. This extended and vigorous midlife period which we are now beginning to experience is largely unaccounted for in myth and archetype for the simple reason that such longevity has never before occurred for the great masses of women as a whole. We desperately need a new body of role models, examples, and teachers to encourage us as we explore the unfamiliar terrain of our changing lives and create new and joyful ways of being in charge of our own destiny.

Clearly it is time for a change of paradigm. Which is as it should be. Life is about nothing if not change, which is, after all, the greatest teaching of the cyclical Goddess. Her power and inspiration lies in Her infinite flexibility, Her adept adaptability, Her unbounded ability to always, always, always change. The Great Goddess, supreme mistress of the art of tranceformation will surely respond to the changes in our lives and times by enlarging the vision of Her Self to include Her fourth dimension -- and ours. The Great Goodess is, even now, beginning to expand to include us in Her archetypal embrace.

In the absence of a traditional mythic example to spur me on and sustain me through my midlife changes, I perceived the need to invent one. So I formulated a fourth stage of development that would place me after the Mother and before the Crone in a newly defined continuum of Womanhood, thus providing me and other women of my generation with a recognizable role model for our middle years: The Four Fold Goddess: The Maiden, the Mother, The Queen and the Crone.

My construct of the four stages of a woman’s life is a much more accurate description of the current Way of Womanhood. Her four periods of growth and transformation resonate deeply with contemporary women. And they seem so natural, somehow. They are in complete metaphoric alignment with the pervasive way that peoples have always ordered existence into Four Quarters. The Four Quarters of the Moon, the Four Seasons of the Year, the Four Solstices and Equinoxes, the Four Elements, the Four Cardinal Directions of the Earth, the Four Periods of the Day.

Is this hubris? Who am I to challenge an archetype that has been so powerful for so many for so long? Well, I am in fact, a proud member of the pioneering Sixties Generation, and consequently, I have a certain modest amount of experience in rebelling against the status quo of old archetypes and striving to replace them with new, more inclusive and relevant ones. Our generation has demonstrated time and again that it is possible to create our own characters, compose our own scripts, and author the sagas of our own lives. We are our own role models. Bereft of affirming depictions of our lives, today’s women-of-a-certain-age are more than ready, willing, and perfectly capable of creating our own.

The mythic model that I envision is recognizably like me, like us. Not yet old, yet no longer young, she stands in her proper place -- after the Mother and before the Crone -- in No Woman’s Land. She plants her flag and claims her space in this previously uncharted midlife territory. Still active and sexy, vital with the enthusiasm and energy of youth, she is tempered with the hard earned experience and leavening attitudes of age.

She has been forced to face and overcome obstacles and hard lessons including her own shadow, and in so doing, has outgrown the boundaries of her old self. Agitated with the unessential and restless for authenticity, She sheds all attachment to the opinions of others and accepts complete responsibility and control for her own care, feeding, and fulfillment. She is the Queen of Her Self, the mature monarch, the sole sovereign of Her own life and destiny. Here, finally, is an archetype that fits.

The Queen paradigm promotes a new understanding of what it might mean to be a middle-aged woman today who accepts complete responsibility for and to her self, and it celebrates the physical, emotional, and spiritual rewards of doing so. Becoming a Queen is not automatic, nor is it instantaneous. As Simone de Beauvoir said, “One is not born a woman, one becomes one.”

The Queen bursts forth from adversity and previous constraints, actual or imagined, to become a proficient player in the game plan of Her choice. The Queen does not invite hard times and trouble, but She chooses to use them well. Actualized, organized, efficient, self-sufficient, competent, ethical, and fair, the Queen has struggled for and earned Her authority and respect. Determined and firmly centered on Her own two feet, She dares to climb, step after step, with nascent surety into the heady realm of Her own highest majesty.

Once on her throne and crowned, the Queen glows golden with confidence, competence, and grace. She is fully aroused and takes great pleasure in the feelings of freedom, elation and wellbeing that come from personal empowerment. This thrilling post-menopausal period of vitality, renewed energy, enhanced self-esteem, optimism, and enthusiasm comes to us in direct proportion to the intensity of our own conscious, conscientious engagement in the process and consequences of transformation.

Another gift of self-enfranchisement is the potent and extremely liberating sexuality of the Queen. Shining from the inside out, Her attractiveness and attraction is rooted deeply in Her self-actualization, self-worth, and inner strength. She exudes a primal excitement, Her power palpable in her very presence. Her desire reaches the boiling point and her inhibitions melt in the heat of Her renewed passion for life.

It was through my own process of coming of age that I conceived of the Queen as the missing link in the chain of life for modern women in the here-to-fore incomplete Triple Goddess archetype. Through my own intentions and concerted efforts, by constantly questioning and reconfiguring, by struggling to mourn and then release what was irrevocably lost, I was trying to recover my own misplaced vitality, interest, and energy after the long hard painful years of my disconcerting midlife changes.

Finally completely self-realized, I was ready and able, and for the first time in my life, I was actually willing to reign; to accept the responsibility for the truth and complete consequences of my own dreams, decisions, and actions. I was a maturing monarch prepared to regulate all of the inner and outer realms of my own domain. By the time I reached 53 or so, I knew myself to be the uncontested mistress of my own fate. Miraculously, it seemed, I had succeeded in turning my midlife crisis into my diamond-encrusted crowning achievement. Surely I was a Queen, and not a Crone. I was the Queen of My Self.

When I first began conceptualizing the Queen, I dreamt of a ceremonial crowning. My dreamtime punster made herself proud as she at once confirmed my passage as through the birth canal into a new life, and acknowledged my newly earned sovereign station -- both in a single, concise, and vivid image. In this Crowning Ceremony, I ascended the throne of my passion and power and pledged myself to my Self. Always aware of the promise of that dramatic nocturnal ordination, I have worn my crown of self-confidence ever since. The more I think about the Queen, the more I become her. And the more Queenly I become, the more I desire to be in the company of other Queens.

"As long as I live, I will have control over

my being -- you find the spirit of Caesar in me."

Long Live the Queens!

excerpt from my book qmr

There are examples of myths in other cultures that express the quadrant model. According to Hesiod's theology there are four primordial Greek deities.
*Square one: Chaos. This is the void.
*Square two: Gaia. This is mother Earth. Gaia is homeostasis and order. That is the second square.
*Square three: Tarturus. This is the underworld. The third square is bad.
*Square four: Eros. Procreation. The fourth square is knowledge/sex.

ACCORING TO HESIOD THERE WERE FOUR PRIMORDIAL BEINGS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theogony

The Theogony (Greek: Θεογονία, Theogonía, Attic Greek: [tʰeoɡoníaː], i.e. "the genealogy or birth of the gods"[1]) is a poem by Hesiod (8th – 7th century BC) describing the origins and genealogies of the Greek gods, composed c. 700 BC. It is written in the Epic dialect of Homeric Greek.

The genealogies[edit]

The first gods[edit]

The world began with the spontaneous generation of four beings: first arose Chaos (Chasm); then came Gaia (Earth), "the ever-sure foundation of all"; and "dim" Tartarus, in the depths of the Earth; and Eros (Desire) "fairest among the deathless gods".[20] From Chaos came Erebus (Darkness) and Nyx (Night). And Nyx "from union in love" with Erebus produced Aether (Light) and Hemera (Day).[21] From Gaia came Uranus (Sky), the Ourea (Mountains), and Pontus (Sea).[22]

Nevertheless, because of the Rúnatal preceding the list, modern commentators sometimes reinterpret the Ljóðatal as referring to runes, specifically with the sixteen letters of the Younger Futhark.

Dianetics: The Original Thesis (1948)

Originally circulated in manuscript form to a few friends, it was soon copied and passed hand-to-hand. It later became widespread and generated a large inflow of correspondence filled with questions, prompting Hubbard to write Dianetics: The Modern Science to Mental Health. Included in this book: The Primary Axioms of Dianetics—axioms upon which the entire subject is built; the discovery of the Dynamic Principle of Existence that drives all life forms—SURVIVE!; the Four Dynamics by which life is compartmented and which determine one's survival; the discovery and anatomy of the Reactive Mind; engrams, the single source of all irrational behavior; the powerful command in every engram which prevented their discovery and handling before Dianetics; the Analytical Mind, its function and operation; the first description of the state of Clear; its attributes and potentials and the Laws of Returning—containing the explanation of both how and why auditing works.

SPIRITS BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR BOOKS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirits_Book

The Spirits Book is divided into four parts or "books", each one split into several chapters. Chapters are not regularly subdivided into sections — though most have titles marking the beginning of particularly sought subjects. Book 3's chapters, for some reason, are not numbered.

Book One (untitled) deals with the origins of the universe and the attributes of God.

Chapter 1 (God) is intended to clarify the true essence of God.

Chapter 2 (General Elements of the Universe) explains the difference between spiritual and material matter and why spirits are not believed by materialists.

Chapter 3 (Vital Principle) is about the differences between animate and inanimate beings, between the living and the dead and the features of intelligence compared to instinct.

Book Two (The Spirit-World) describes spiritual life.

Chapter 1 (Spirits) explains what spirits are, where they come from, what they are like, how they manifest, the purpose of their existence, and how people perceive them.

Chapter 2 (Incarnation of Spirits) is about why spirits incarnate in material bodies.

Chapter 3 (Return from Corporeal Life to Spirit Life) is about disincarnation (the death of the Physical Body).

Chapter 4 (Plurality of Existences) is about reincarnation.

Chapter 5 (Considerations on the Plurality of Existences) is an essay by Kardec meant to clarify the doctrine of the previous chapter.

Chapter 6 (Spirit Life) describes what exists in the afterlife, the spiritual world.

Chapter 7 (Return to Corporeal Life) explains how and when spirits come back to life by literally being born again.

Chapter 8 (Emancipation of the Soul) is about situations in which the spirit of a living person may be free to interact with the spirits of the dead, as in near-death experiences or during a deep sleep. This chapter does not cover conscious mediumship.

Chapter 9 (Intervention of Spirits in the Material World) is about situations in which the spirits of the dead may, ostensibly or not, intentionally or not, have any form of influence on events of the living world.

Chapter 10 (Occupations and Missions of the Spirits) is an essay by Kardec on the different reasons why high spirits interfere with the world.

Chapter 11 (The Three Reigns) is about the differences between inanimate beings (mineral), plants, and animals and contains the standard Spiritist Doctrine on Metempsychosis.

Book Three (Moral Laws) contains what Kardec regarded as the kernel of his doctrine, the special and fair (in his view) moral laws that provided explanations and consoled people in moments of anger or grief. Such laws were actually the following:

Divine Law

The Law of Adoration

The Law of Labour

The Law of Reproduction

The Law of Preservation

The Law of Destruction

Social Law

The Law of Progress

The Law of Equality

The Law of Liberty

The Law of Justice, Love and Charity

Moral Perfection

Book Four (Hopes and Consolations) is about the most common doubts people have about religion in general and tries to solve the most sensitive ones under new light.

Chapter 1 (Earthly Joys and Sorrows) is about the meaning of the experiences we have on Earth, both good and bad.

Chapter 2 (Future Joys and Sorrows) is about the laws governing the future lives we are bound to live after we die.

AUGURY SKY DIVIDED FOUR REGIONS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augur

Technically the sky was divided into four sections or regions: dextera, sinistra, antica and postica (right, left, anterior and posterior).[20]

The character that best represented and portrayed the art however was Attus Navius. His story is related by Cicero.[32] He was born into a very poor family. One day he lost one of his pigs. He then promised the gods that if he found it, he would offer them the biggest grapes growing in his vineyard. After recovering his pig he stood right at the middle of his grape yard facing South. He divided the sky into four sections and observed birds: when they appeared he walked in that direction and found an extraordinary large grape that he offered to the gods.

ORACLE OF DELPHI FOUR STAGE PROCESS

The experience of supplicants[edit]

In antiquity, the people who went to the Oracle to ask for advice were known as “consultants,” literally, “those who seek counsel.”.[46] It would appear that the supplicant to the oracle would undergo a four-stage process, typical of shamanic journeys.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythia

Step 1: Journey to Delphi — Supplicants were motivated by some need to undertake the long and sometimes arduous journey to come to Delphi in order to consult the oracle. This journey was motivated by an awareness of the existence of the oracle, the growing motivation on the part of the individual or group to undertake the journey, and the gathering of information about the oracle as providing answers to important questions.

Step 2: Preparation of the Supplicant — Supplicants were interviewed in preparation of their presentation to the Oracle, by the priests in attendance. The genuine cases were sorted and the supplicant had to go through rituals involving the framing of their questions, the presentation of gifts to the Oracle and a procession along the Sacred Way carrying laurel leaves to visit the temple, symbolic of the journey they had made.

Step 3: Visit to the Oracle — The supplicant would then be led into the temple to visit the adyton, put his question to the Pythia, receive his answer and depart. The degree of preparation already undergone would mean that the supplicant was already in a very aroused and meditative state, similar to the shamanic journey elaborated on in the article.

Step 4: Return Home — Oracles were meant to give advice to shape future action, that was meant to be implemented by the supplicant, or by those that had sponsored the supplicant to visit the Oracle. The validity of the Oracular utterance was confirmed by the consequences of the application of the oracle to the lives of those people who sought Oracular guidance.[47]

FOUR PRIMORDIAL GREEK DEITIES HESIOD

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_primordial_deities

Mitchell Miller argues that the first four primordial deities arise in a highly significant relationship. He argues that Chaos represents differentiation, since Chaos differentiates (separates, divides) Tartarus and Earth.[9] Even though Chaos is "first of all" for Hesiod, Miller argues that Tartarus represents the primacy of the undifferentiated, or the unlimited. Since undifferentiation is unthinkable, Chaos is the "first of all" in that he is the first thinkable being. In this way, Chaos (the principle of division) is the natural opposite of Eros (the principle of unification). Earth (light, day, waking, life) is the natural opposite of Tartarus (darkness, night, sleep, death). These four are the parents of all the other Titans.

Hesiod's Theogony (c. 700 BC) tells the story of the genesis of the gods. After invoking the Muses (II.1-116), he tells of the generation of the first four primordial deities:

"First Chaos came to be, but next... Earth... and dim Tartarus in the depth of the... Earth, and Eros..."[1]

According to Hesiod, the next primordial gods that come to be are:

Darkness and Night (born of Chaos);

Light and Day (born of Night and Darkness);

Heaven and Ocean (virginally born of Earth)

TROLL CROSS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_cross

In Sweden, as well as Norway, a trollkors or troll cross is a bent piece of iron worn as an amulet to ward off malevolent magic. Although commonly thought of as a part of Swedish folklore, it was first created—as an item of jewelry—by the smith Kari Erlands from western Dalarna, sometime in the late 1990s. It was claimed to have been copied by a protective rune found at her parents' farm, but this has not been verified. However, it does bear some resemblance to the othala rune in the Elder Futhark.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker

In the spring of 1870, four helmet plate patrices were found by Erik Gustaf Pettersson and Anders Petter Nilsson in a cairn on the lands of the farm No 5 Björnhovda in Torslunda parish, Öland, Sweden.[1] Two relevant images are depicted below, along with two associated woodcuts made two years later in 1872.

http://gnosticteachings.org/courses/alchemy/3142-mercury-hermes.html

Students are not taught these facts when learning about Greek mythology, yet this is the most significant symbol of Hermes, the most important.

The Hermai were placed at crossroads all over Greece. A cross roads is a cross, an intersection of four directions. The cross is not merely a Christian symbol; it is universal. So we already can see a very strong connection between Hermes and the Christ of the Christians: the cross, the number four, the ram, the lamb, the rooster, being born from the mother Maia, Maria, Mary.

These are symbols that represent Hermes, which are very similar in modern times to the symbols that are used to represent Christ. Christ is represented by a lamb and also by a rooster.

This is why Hermes is called the lamb bearer, Hermes Kriophoros: “Hermes, lamb-bearer.” The lamb is a symbol of Christ. We have all seen images of Jesus carrying the lamb. Jesus is called “the Shepherd,” yet so is Hermes.

The Scientology cross is one of the principal symbols of Scientology. It is most often used to represent the Church of Scientology.

The cross closely resembles the Christian cross, but differs from it with the addition of four diagonal rays between the conventional horizontal and vertical arms. The eight points of the cross represent the eight dynamics in Scientology:

The Self

Creativity, sex, and procreation (family)

Group, society, community

Species survival (humankind)

Life forms in general

Matter, Energy, Space & Time (physical universe)

Spirit (self or others as a spiritual being)

Infinity or Supreme being

FOUR WORDS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEST_(Scientology)

MEST is an acronym used in Scientology and coined by author L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard used the first letters of the words matter, energy, space and time, the component parts of the physical universe.[1] Writings and lectures by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard frequently use the term MEST in place of the phrase "the physical universe". According to Hubbard, "theta energy" (souls or spiritual entitites) exists in a separate universe from the MEST universe, with theta influencing MEST.[2][3][4] Hubbard described the purpose of the "Theta Universe" as "the conquest, change, and ordering of MEST".[5][6][7]

The Lindbacke Labyrinth was built on the edge of the Baltic. Now the entire new shopping town of Nyköping is between the labyrinth and the sea! I visited this particular classical seven circuit labyrinth on several occasions with Dan Mattsson, a Swedish dowser, and his son Manfred. It was quite easy to see where the shore had been when it was built, only 25 feet from the mouth of the labyrinth. Today, Swedes use it all the time – lovers, picnickers, kids on school outings, and many others.

The Scandinavians have taken the classical seven circuit labyrinth several steps further.Visby is a 13th century walled city on Gotland, an island off the southeast coast of Sweden in the Baltic Sea. During its heyday,Visby was a center of trade for all of northern Europe. Just north of the city is Galgberget, or Gallows Hill, which is honeycombed with tunnels. (Actually much of Gotland is honeycombed with natural tunnels.) At the base of the hill, within sight of the Baltic, is one of the best preserved of Sweden's labyrinths, called Galgberget.

Perhaps the most exciting stone complex that I saw in Sweden was centered around a tall, truncated human-made hill west of Stockholm at a place called Anundshög, near Västerås in Västmanland. At the base of this impressive hill are two large ship settings (stenskeppen). They look similar to the stone rings of Britain, but instead of being circular, they are shaped like the Viking ships, vesica shaped. A vesica is formed when two circles (usually of the same size) intersect. The vesica is only that part of the circles which intersect. In addition at Anundshög, there is a long stone row, various smaller burial mounds, and an impressively tall rune stone.

FOURTH IS DIFFERENT

https://blavatskytheosophy.com/the-four-branches-of-the-theosophical-movement/

The first split in the Theosophical Movement occurred in 1895, four years after the death of H.P. Blavatsky.

Today there are four main branches of the Theosophical Movement, all of which are organisationally distinct from one another. There is no such thing as THE Theosophical Society, since there are three totally unrelated international organisations all using this name. There is also a fourth worldwide group which does not call itself a Theosophical Society but the “United Lodge of Theosophists”.

There is next to nothing online in the way of clear comparative explanations about the nature, focus, and objectives of these four main branches of the Movement, and the various distinctions between them. Some confusion has naturally arisen as a result of this. The following is a brief but clear summary of the central and most important facts about all four.

As an argument, Krag said the first four kings' deaths represent the cosmology of Greek philosopher Empedocles, with the four classical elements Earth, Water, Air, and Fire, and thus that a euhemeristic vision influenced the description of the first few generations. Krag's perception was captivating and won widespread acclaim.[39]

FOUR MACEDONIAN WARS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonian_Wars

Fourth Macedonian War (150 to 148 BC)[edit]

Main article: Fourth Macedonian War

[show] v t e

Fourth Macedonian War

The Fourth Macedonian War, fought from 150 BC to 148 BC, was fought against a Macedonian pretender to the throne, named Andriscus, who was again destabilizing Greece by attempting to re-establish the old Kingdom.[27] The Romans swiftly defeated the Macedonians at the Second battle of Pydna. In response, the Achaean League in 146 BC mobilized for a new war against Rome. This is sometimes referred to as the Achaean War, and was noted for its short duration and its timing right after the fall of Macedonia. Until this time, Rome had only campaigned in Greece in order to fight Macedonian forts, allies or clients. Rome's military supremacy was well established, having defeated Macedonia and its vaunted Phalanx already on 3 occasions, and defeating superior numbers against the Seleucids in Asia. The Achaean leaders almost certainly knew that this declaration of war against Rome was hopeless, as Rome had triumphed against far stronger and larger opponents, the Roman legion having proved its supremacy over the Macedonian phalanx. Polybius blames the demagogues of the cities of the league for inspiring the population into a suicidal war. Nationalist stirrings and the idea of triumphing against superior odds motivated the league into this rash decision. The Achaean League was swiftly defeated, and, as an object lesson, Rome utterly destroyed the city of Corinth in 146 BC, the same year that Carthage was destroyed.[28] After nearly a century of constant crisis management in Greece, which always led back to internal instability and war when Rome pulled out, Rome decided to divide Macedonia into two new Roman provinces, Achaea and Epirus.

Question: What Were the 4 Tasks Psyche Had to Complete?

Background to the story of Psyche.

Answer:

The taskmaster in the story of Cupid and Psyche was Cupid's mother, the love goddess Venus or Aphrodite. Venus had never liked Psyche, so the opportunity of putting her to a series of tests gave Venus a chance to demand the seemingly impossible. In order for Psyche to win back her husband, Cupid, Venus set 4 seemingly impossible tasks before Psyche:

sorting out a huge pile of seeds

retrieving the Golden Fleece,

filling a flask from the water that fills the River Styx, and

returning from the Underworld with a box of the beauty ointment of Proserpina (aka Persephone).

FOUR RIVERS MILK FOUR DWARFS (norse has a lot of threes)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ymir

Gangleri asks where Ymir lived and what sustained him. High explains that the drips next produced a cow named Auðumbla. From her teats flowed four rivers of milk, and from it fed Ymir. Gangleri asks what the cow fed from, and High responds that the cow licked salty rime-stones. The first day Auðumbla licked the rime stones it uncovered that evening the hair of a man. The second day it uncovered his head. The third day a man was uncovered from the ice. This man was named Búri, and was large, powerful, and beautiful to behold. Búri married a jötunn, Bestla, the daughter of Bölþorn. The two had three sons; Odin, Vili, and Vé. High adds that "Odin and his brothers must be the rulers of heaven and earth; it is our opinion that this must be what he is called. This is the name of one who is the greatest and most glorious that we know, and you would well to agree to call him that too".[13]

High relates that Odin, Vili, and Vé killed Ymir, and his body produced so much blood from his wounds that within it drowned all the jötnar but two, Bergelmir, who, on a lúðr with his (unnamed) wife, survived and repopulated the jötnar.[13]

Gangleri asks what, if High, Just-As-High, and Third believe the trio to be gods, what the three did then. High says that the trio took the body into the middle of Ginnungagap and from his flesh fashioned the Earth, from his blood the sea and lakes, from his bones rocks, scree and stones his teeth, molars, and bones. Just-As-High adds that from his gushing wounds they created the sea that surrounds the Earth. Third says that the trio took his skull and placed it above the Earth and from it made the sky. They placed the sky above the earth, and, to hold up the sky, they placed four dwarfs—Norðri, Suðri, Austri and Vestri—at its four corners. The trio took the molten particles and sparks that flew from Muspell and "they fixed all the lights, some in the sky, some moved in a wandering course beneath the sky, but they appointed them positions and ordained their courses". Third cites a stanza from Völuspá in support, stating that by ways of these sky lights days and years were reckoned and counted, and that the stanza reflects that the cosmological bodies did not know their places prior to the creation of earth.[14]

CANADA WAS ORIGINALLY DIVIDED INTO FOUR PROVINCES- THERE ARE FOUR COUNTRIES IN GREAT BRITAIN

Atlantic Canada is the region of Canada comprising the four provinces located on the Atlantic coast, excluding Quebec: the three Maritime provinces – New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia – and the easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The population of the four Atlantic provinces in 2016 was about 2,300,000[1] on half a million km2. The provinces combined had an approximate GDP of $110.308 billion[2] in 2011.

I DESCRIBED THAT THE AMERICAN COLONIES WERE ORIGINALLY DIVIDED IN FOUR REGIONS THE FOURTH WAS DIFFERENT- STILL HISTORIANS SAY THAT AMERICA HAS FOUR REGIONS WITH FOUR DIALECTS---- CANADA ALSO STARTED FOUR REGIONS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_evolution_of_Canada

The Dominion of Canada was formed on July 1, 1867, when the British colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia were merged to form a single Dominion within the British Empire. Canada continued to expand across North America as other British colonies joined with or were ceded to Canada, eventually growing from four provinces to ten provinces and three territories. Politically, Canada gained increasing independence in the 20th century, eventually becoming a fully sovereign state in 1982.

FOUR HEADS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svetovid

Svetovid is associated with war and divination and depicted as a four-headed god with two heads looking forward and two back. A statue portraying the god shows him with four heads, each one looking in a separate direction, a symbolical representation of the four directions of the compass, and also perhaps the four seasons of the year. Each face had a specific colour. The northern face of this totem was white (hence White Russia / Belarus and the White Sea), the western, red (hence Red Ruthenia), the southern, black (hence the Black Sea) and the eastern, green (hence Zeleny klyn).[5]

Boris Rybakov argued for identification of the faces with the gods Perun, Svarog, Lada and Mokosh (compare Zbruch idol). Joined together, they see all four sides of the world. This gave rise to a false etymology of the name of the god as "world-seer" (svet="world", vid="sight"; Svetovid="worldseer"). However, the forms Sventevith and Zvantewith show that the name derives from the word svętъ, meaning "saint, holy". The second stem is sometimes reconstructed as vit="lord, ruler, winner".

According to various chronicles (i.e. Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus and Chronica Slavorum by Helmold), the temple at Jaromarsburg contained a giant wooden statue of Svantevit depicting him with four heads (or one head with four faces) and a horn of abundance. Each year the horn was filled with fresh mead.

EMPEDOCLES ON SEEING FIRE AS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FOUR ELEMENTS AND SEEING THE FOUR ELEMENTS AS THE PRIMORDIAL GODS

http://www.mycrandall.ca/courses/grphil/empedocles.htm

http://www.mycrandall.ca/courses/grphil/empedocles.htm

There is no emptiness in the All or Being, from which it follows that there could be no increase in the All, for increase presupposes emptiness. (For there to be something "too full" implies that there is "empty space," because there can be differences in the density of the four elements only if there is empty space). It follows that if there is no empty space there can be no increase in the four elements. Increase implies empty space into which more of the same could be added.

3.2. Empedocles and the Possibility of Becoming

Empedocles departs from Eleatic philosophy insofar as he asserts that Being is not one, but many. In fact, for him, there are four basic elements, each of which is imperishable and unchanging, from which all things are composed; he calls these "the roots of all things" (Fr. 6), and they are identified with fire, earth, water, and air (Fr. 17; Metaphysics, 1. 7; 987a 26-27). Similarly, Clement of Alexandria quotes Empedocles as follows, “The four roots of all things first do you hear—Fire, water, earth, and ether's boundless height: For of these all that was, is, shall be, comes” (Strom. 6.2). Aristotle explains Empedocles' view:

Empedocles, then, in contrast with his predecessors, was the first to introduce the dividing of this cause, not positing one source of movement, but different and contrary sources. Again, he was the first to speak of four material elements; yet he does not use four, but treats them as two only; he treats fire by itself, and its opposite—earth, air, and water—as one kind of thing. We may learn this by study of his verses. (Metaphysics 1.4; 985a 29-985b 3

As Aristotle makes clear, Empedocles identifies not one archê but four archai. Although it is not clear what is meant, Aristotle further clarifies his statement by saying that that actually these four elements are really two archai: fire and the other three elements, earth air and water, which are said to be the opposite of fire. Empedocles was the first of the pre-Socratics to posit that there was a plurality of archai to explain all movement or becoming.

In Fr. 6, Empedocles identifies the four elements with four gods: "Hear first the four roots of all things: shining Zeus, lifebringing Hera, Aidoneus and Nestis whose tear-drops are a well-spring to mortals." With the exception of Nestis (probably Persephone), who represents water, it is not immediately obvious to which elements these divine beings refer. Hippolytus, however, identifies Zeus with fire, Hera with earth and Aidoneus with air (Ref. 7. 17). It is probable that Empedocles actually thinks that the elements are divine, for Aristotle reports that Empedocles considers the elements to be prior to the gods and to be gods (Gen. et Corr. 333b 20-22). He means that the traditional Greek gods, like everything else, are composed of the elements, and that the elements of which they are composed are, as it were, more divine than they are, since they have this ontological priority (see Fr. 21). Presumably the four elements are gods because they are eternal and indestructible. As divine, the elements are also sentient, as the gods are depicted in Greek mythology. The attribution of sentience to the four elements explains the enigmatic sayings in which Empedocles affirms that all things have thought:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiccan_views_of_divinity

The classical elements are a key feature of the Wiccan world-view. Every manifest force or form is seen to express one of the four archetypal elements — Earth, Air, Fire and Water — or several in combination. This scheme is fundamentally identical with that employed in other Western Esoteric and Hermetic traditions, such as Theosophy and the Golden Dawn, which in turn were influenced by the Hindu system of tattvas.

There is no consensus as to the exact nature of these elements. One popular system is the ancient Greek conception, where the elements correspond to matter (earth) and energy (fire), with the mediating elements (water, air) relating to the phases of matter (fire/earth mixtures). The Aristotelian system proposes a fifth or quintessential element, spirit (aether, akasha). The preferred version is a matter of ongoing dispute in the Wiccan community. There are other non-scientific conceptions, but they are not widely used among Wiccans.

To some Wiccans, the five points of the frequently worn pentagram symbolise, among other things, the four elements with spirit presiding at the top.[15] The pentagram is the symbol most commonly associated with Wicca in modern times. It is often circumscribed — depicted within a circle — and is usually (though not exclusively) shown with a single point upward. The inverse pentagram, with two points up, is a symbol of the second degree initiation rite of traditional Wicca; some Wiccans have alternatively been known to associate the inverted pentagram with evil.[16] In geometry, the pentagram is an elegant expression of the golden ratio phi which is popularly connected with ideal beauty and was considered by the Pythagoreans to express truths about the hidden nature of existence.

In the casting of a magic circle, the four cardinal elements are visualised as contributing their influence from the four cardinal directions: Air in the east, Fire in the south, Water in the west and Earth in the north. There may be variations between groups though, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere, since these attributions are symbolic of (amongst other things) the path of the sun through the daytime sky. For example, in southern latitudes the sun reaches its hottest point in the northern part of the sky, and north is the direction of the Tropics, so this is commonly the direction given to Fire.[17]

APHRODITE FOURTH DAY

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphrodite

Hellenic polytheists of today celebrate their religious devotion to Aphrodite on two annual and monthly festival days. Aphrodisia is her main festival day, which is celebrated on the 4th day of Hekatombaion in the Attic calendar, falling in the months of July and August in the Gregorian calendar, depending on the year. Adonia, a joint festival of Aphrodite and her partner Adonis, is celebrated on the first full moon following the Northern spring equinox, often roughly as the same week the Christian festival of Easter is celebrated. The fourth day of each month is considered a sacred day of both Aphrodite and her son Eros.[34]

THE FOUR OF THEM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Útgarða-Loki

In the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning (chapter 44), the enthroned figure of Third reluctantly relates a tale in which Thor, Loki and Thor's servants, Þjálfi and Röskva are traveling to the east. They arrive at a vast forest in Jötunheimr, and they continue through the woods until dark. The four seek shelter for the night and discover an immense building. Finding shelter in a side room, they experience earthquakes through the night. The earthquakes cause all four to be fearful, except Thor, who grips his hammer in defense. The building turns out to be the huge glove of Skrýmir, who has been snoring throughout the night, causing what seemed to be earthquakes. The next night, all four sleep beneath an oak tree near Skrýmir in fear.[1]

Thor issues blows to the sleeping Skrýmir while the group looks on in an illustration (1842) by Ludwig von Maydell.

Thor wakes up in the middle of the night, and a series of events occur where Thor twice attempts to destroy the sleeping Skrýmir with his hammer. Skrýmir awakes after each attempt, only to say that he detected an acorn falling on his head or that he wonders if bits of tree from the branches above have fallen on top of him. The second attempt awakes Skrýmir. Skrýmir gives them advice; if they are going to be cocky at the castle of Útgarðr it would be better for them to turn back now, for Útgarða-Loki's men there won't put up with it. Skrýmir throws his knapsack onto his back and abruptly goes into the forest and "there is no report that the Æsir expressed hope for a happy reunion".[2]

The four travelers continue their journey until midday. They find themselves facing a massive castle in an open area. The castle is so tall that they must bend their heads back to their spines to see above it. At the entrance to the castle is a shut gate, and Thor finds that he cannot open it. Struggling, all four squeeze through the bars of the gate, and continue to a large hall. Inside the great hall are two benches, where many generally large people sit on two benches. The four see Útgarða-Loki, the king of the castle, sitting.[3]

FOUR OF THEM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrephoros

An Arrephoros (Ancient Greek: Ἀρρήφορος) was a girl acolyte in the cult of Athena Polias on the Athenian Acropolis. They were seven to eleven years old. According to Pausanias,[1] two Arrephoroi lived for a year on the Acropolis and concluded their term with a mystery rite called the Arrhephoria: they carried unknown objects into an underground cavern, and there exchanged them for other unknown objects.

The lexicon of Harpocration states (s.v. Arrêphorein) that there were four Arrephoroi and that two supervised the weaving of the Panathenaic peplos.

THE CITY OF ROME WAS DIVIDED INTO FOUR REGIONS----- THE RURAL AREAS OF ROME WERE DIVIDED AMONG 16 TRIBES- THERE ARE 16 SQUARES IN THE QUADRANT MODEL

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_tribe

The institution of the tribes that made up the comitia tributa, as well as the centuries of the comitia centuriata, occurred under Servius Tullius, the sixth king of Rome, whose reign is traditionally dated from 578 to 534 BC. According to Livy, Servius divided the city into four regions,[17] and the surrounding land into twenty-six, thus dividing the people into thirty tribes, based on geographic location. The names of the four "urban" tribes were based on the four regions of the city that they represented, while those of the "rural" or "rustic" tribes were likely based on the names of families that owned considerable tracts of land in those areas.[1][2][8] Ten of the original rural tribes, whose names are lost to history, were destroyed in the war against Lars Porsena at the commencement of the Republic.[1] Those that remained were the four urban tribes: Collina, Esquilina, Palatina, and Suburana (also called Succusana); together with sixteen rural tribes: Aemilia, Camilia, Cornelia, Fabia, Galeria, Horatia, Lemonia, Menenia, Papiria, Pollia, Popillia, Pupinia, Romilia, Sergia, Veturia, and Voltinia.

THE FOUR WORLD ZONES

https://www.khanacademy.org/partner-content/big-history-project/expansion-interconnection/expansion/a/the-four-world-zones

Climate and geography divide human populations

For a brief period, from about 10,000 years ago to about 500 years ago, the rising seas at the end of the last ice age divided the world into four non-connected geographic zones. Isolated from one another, four groups of people developed distinct lifeways and conducted their own experiments in human culture.

What are world zones?

In his book Maps of Time, David Christian describes the division of the world into four world zones, which helps him analyze and explain human history. Many other historians have recognized the two largest world zones — Afro-Eurasia, which they often call the “Old World,” and the Americas, which they call the “New World.” But Christian was living in Australia, and preferred looking at the whole world. These are the four world zones that he uses:

01 - Afro-Eurasia: Africa and the Eurasian landmass, including offshore islands like Britain and Japan

02 - The Americas: North, Central, and South America, plus offshore islands like the Caribbean Islands

03 - Australasia: Australia and the island of Papua New Guinea, plus neighboring islands in the Pacific Ocean

04 - The Pacific: Island societies such as New Zealand, Micronesia, Melanesia, Hawaii

(Antarctica is not considered a world zone because until very recently no people lived there.)

FOUR DWARVES IN PROSE EDDA

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norðri,_Suðri,_Austri_and_Vestri

In Norse mythology, Norðri, Suðri, Austri and Vestri ("Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western") are four dwarves in the Prose Edda book Gylfaginning who each support one of the four cardinal points. Together, they uphold the heavenly dome, created from the skull of the jötunn Ymir. They probably represent the four winds,[1] corresponding to the four stags of the cosmic tree Yggdrasill.[2]

FOUR MINOAN SACRED BEASTS

https://at37.wordpress.com/2012/11/04/egyptian-cretan-labyrinths-dna-i-ching-swastika/

I find it amazing that scholars refuse to link the Snake Bull Lion plus the mystical Gryphon to the four archetypes found on display in the tarot on Card X the Wheel of Fortune or Card XXI the World. (the code I extracted in around 2005, the numbers 11, 2, 5, 8 would be my guide for quite a few years until around 2010 I realized I could convert 11, 8, 2, 5, digit for digit for a new code 1, 3, 7, and 6.

To prove that an analogy is indeed viable … of the four evangelists which one would be considered the ‘mystical’ one?

That would be the St. John who wrote the gospel associated with the eagle traditionally.

And would the Man be then equated with the snake?

Thus we have a match between the four Minoan sacred beasts and the four gospels represented by the traditional associations.

11 Man = Snake

8 Eagle = Gryphon

5 Lion = Lion

2 Bull = Ox

The swastika symbol has been identified as representing the hammer or lightning of Thor.[49] Scholar Hilda Ellis Davidson (1965) comments on the usage of the swastika as a symbol of Thor:
The protective sign of the hammer was worn by women, as we know from the fact that it has been found in women's graves. It seems to have been used by the warrior also, in the form of the swastika. [...] Primarily it appears to have had connections with light and fire, and to have been linked with the sun-wheel. It may have been on account of Thor's association with lightning that this sign was used as an alternative to the hammer, for it is found on memorial stones in Scandinavia besides inscriptions to Thor. When we find it on the pommel of a warrior's sword and on his sword-belt, the assumption is that the warrior was placing himself under the Thunder God's protection.[50]
Swastikas appear on various Germanic objects stretching from the Migration Period to the Viking Age, such as the 3rd century Værløse Fibula (DR EM85;123) from Zealand, Denmark; the Gothic spearhead from Brest-Litovsk, Belarus; numerous Migration Period bracteates; cremation urns from early Anglo-Saxon England; the 8th century Sæbø sword from Sogn, Norway; and the 9th century Snoldelev Stone (DR 248) from Ramsø, Denmark.

https://at37.wordpress.com/2012/04/12/thunder-perfect-mind-intellect/

According to some scholars, the swastika shape may have been a variant popular in Anglo-Saxon England prior to Christianization, especially in East Anglia and Kent.[20] Wilson (1894) points out that while the swastika had been "vulgarly called in Scandinavia the hammer of Thor" ( in Icelandic: Thorshamarmerki, mark of Thor's hammer ), the symbol properly so called had a Y or T shape.[

The earliest record of the Sumerian creation myth, called The Eridu Genesis by historian Thorkild Jacobsen, is found on a single fragmentary tablet excavated in Nippur. It is written in the Sumerian language and dated to around 1600 BC. Other Sumerian creation myths from around this date are called the Barton Cylinder, the Debate between sheep and grain and the Debate between Winter and Summer, also found at Nippur.
Where the tablet picks up, the four gods An, Enlil, Enki and Ninhursanga create the black-headed people and create comfortable conditions for the animals to live and procreate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauburu The lauburu or Basque cross (Basque: lauburu, "four heads") is a traditional Basque swastika with four comma-shaped heads. Today, it is a symbol of the Basque Country and the unity of the Basque people. It is also associated with Celtic peoples, most notably Galicians and Asturians. It can be constructed with a compass and straightedge, beginning with the formation of a square template; each head can be drawn from a neighboring vertex of this template with two compass settings, with one radius half the length of the other.

Historians and authorities have attempted to apply allegorical meaning to the ancient symbol. Some say it signifies the "four heads or regions" of the Basque Country. The lauburu does not appear in any of the seven coats-of-arms that have been combined in the arms of the Basque Country: Higher and Lower Navarre, Gipuzkoa, Biscay, Álava, Labourd, and Soule. The Basque intellectual Imanol Mujica liked to say that the heads signify spirit, life, consciousness, and form, but it is generally used as a symbol of prosperity.

A terra-cotta found in a Phoenician tomb from Cyprus shows a Sun-priestess, having swastikas on her attire and carrying a vase on her had, just as Sekhmet carries the sun on her head.

Geneticist Spencer Wells, in his study for The National Geographic Society, ran tests on the DNA gathered from Phoenician skeletons and concluded that they're far older than either “Semite” or “Indo-European”. They come from “the older Mediterranean sub-stratum” predating both of these groups. However, they eventually adopted a Semitic language.

Stanford University admits that the Phoenicians are known to have traded with the Indian city of Kerala as early as 3000 BC "for ivory, sandalwood, and spices." That might explain the presence of the swastikas, the Hindu sign for prosperity, on this Phoenician artifact.

In a tomb from Skyros (Greece), was found a golden disc decorated with five rosettes and four swastikas.

excerpt from my book qmr
The Greek poet Hesiod describes ages of men that fit the quadrant model pattern. They are
Square one: The golden age. Hesiod states that men of this age are wise. They do not have to work and they live to a very old age. The first square is characteristically related to wisdom. The first square is the mind. The first square is good and conservative.
Square two: The silver age. Hesiod describes that this age is an age where the people worship the gods but they are ultimately kicked out of this age due to impiety. The second square is related to religiosity.
Square three: The bronze age. Hesiod depicts men of this age as hard and tough and warlike. This age is characterized by war. The third square is the most physical and it is destructive.
Square four: The heroic age. Notice how the first three ages are named after metals. The fourth square is always different. During this age men live with demigods and heroes. The fourth square always has a sort of transcendent quality to it, that makes it different from the first three.
Square five: The iron age. This is the current age where Hesiod declares might makes right and the world is full of evil.

Paracelsus, an alchemist, associated different spirits with each element.
Square 1: Sylph: spirit of air (curious)
Square 2 :Undine: spirit of water (inspired)
Square 3: Gnome: spirit of earth (industrious)
Square 4: Salamander: spirit of fire (changeable)

FOUR SECTIONS

Duty is described as "A note on the chief rules of practical conduct to be observed by those who accept the Law of Thelema."[78] It is not a numbered "Liber" as are all the documents which Crowley intended for A∴A∴, but rather listed as a document intended specifically for Ordo Templi Orientis.[78] There are four sections:[79]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelema

A. Your Duty to Self: describes the self as the center of the universe, with a call to learn about one's inner nature. Admonishes the reader to develop every faculty in a balanced way, establish one's autonomy, and to devote oneself to the service of one's own True Will.

B. Your Duty to Others: An admonishment to eliminate the illusion of separateness between oneself and all others, to fight when necessary, to avoid interfering with the Wills of others, to enlighten others when needed, and to worship the divine nature of all other beings.

C. Your Duty to Mankind: States that the Law of Thelema should be the sole basis of conduct. That the laws of the land should have the aim of securing the greatest liberty for all individuals. Crime is described as being a violation of one's True Will.

D. Your Duty to All Other Beings and Things: States that the Law of Thelema should be applied to all problems and used to decide every ethical question. It is a violation of the Law of Thelema to use any animal or object for a purpose for which it is unfit, or to ruin things so that they are useless for their purpose. Natural resources can be used by man, but this should not be done wantonly, or the breach of the law will be avenged.

The Prologue is the first section of four books of the Edda, and consists of an euhemerized Christian account of the origins of Nordic mythology: the Nordic gods are described as human Trojan warriors who left Troy after the fall of that city (an origin similar to the one chosen by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the 12th century to account for the ancestry of the British nation, and which parallels Virgil's Aeneid).

FOUR GENERIC EMOTIONS

https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/seneca/

Seneca's detailed analysis of anger adds in interesting ways to our knowledge of how, precisely, the Stoic claim that emotions are opinions plays out. According to the early Stoics, there are four generic emotions: pleasure (in the sense of being pleased about something), pain (in the sense of being distressed or feeling displeased), desire, and fear. Pleasure is directed at a presumed good that is present; pain at a presumed bad that is present; desire at a presumed good in the future; fear at a presumed bad in the future. Since emotions are impulses, they result in action (if there is no external impediment). Anger counts as a kind of desire. In anger, the agent assents to the impression that she should take revenge. But the judgment that first generates anger is something like ‘He wronged me’. On Anger thus helps shed light on the way in which several judgments can figure in one emotion, and how emotion is tied up with irrational action (Vogt 2006; Kaster 2010, Introduction).

The five sacred mountains of the Chinese are arranged according to a quincunx (a five part cross)

Ancient legends say: Tai Shan was formed by the head of Pan Gu, who after creating heaven and earth, dies from exhaustion. His head and limbs became the five mountains. The Five Great Mountains are arranged according to the five cardinal directions:

Chinese geomancy includes the centre as a direction.

In ancient times, Mt. Huashan was called Mt. Taihuashan. From a distance the five peaks seem to form the shape of a 'flower' (hua in Chinese), hence the name 'Huashan'.

Ziling (2003) say “According to Shu Yi Ji (or A Collection of Bizarre Stories) authored by Ren Fang of the Liang Dynasty, citing Chinese folklore, Pang Gu was the first ruler of the universe. Ren tells a story: "Once upon a time when Pang Gu died, his head became the Four Sacred Mountains, his eyes became the sun and the moon, his body fat became the rivers and the seas, his hair became prairies and forests." Legends from the Qin and Han Dynasties inform us that Pang Gu's head became the Eastern Mountain, his chest became the Central Mountain, the left arm became the Southern Mountain, his right arm became the Northern Mountain and his feet became the Western Mountain." Since the existence of this legend, the Eastern Mountain, or Mount Tai, thus became the head of the Five Sacred Mountains”.

excerpt from my book qmr

There are examples of myths in other cultures that express the quadrant model. According to Hesiod's theology there are four primordial Greek deities.
*Square one: Chaos. This is the void.
*Square two: Gaia. This is mother Earth. Gaia is homeostasis and order. That is the second square.
*Square three: Tarturus. This is the underworld. The third square is bad.
*Square four: Eros. Procreation. The fourth square is knowledge/sex.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_primordial_deities

ACCORDING TO HESIOD THERE WERE FOUR PRIMORDIAL DEITIES

Hesiod's primordial genealogy[edit]

Hesiod's Theogony (c. 700 BC) tells the story of the genesis of the gods. After invoking the Muses (II.1-116), he tells of the generation of the first four primordial deities:

"First Chaos came to be, but next... Earth... and dim Tartarus in the depth of the... Earth, and Eros..."[2]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_primordial_deities

Mitchell Miller argues that the first four primordial deities arise in a highly significant relationship. He argues that Chaos represents differentiation, since Chaos differentiates (separates, divides) Tartarus and Earth.[10] Even though Chaos is "first of all" for Hesiod, Miller argues that Tartarus represents the primacy of the undifferentiated, or the unlimited.

FOUR NATURE SPIRITS

http://www.sacred-texts.com/eso/sta/sta25.htm

Concerning the elemental ethers in which the Nature spirits exist, Paracelsus wrote: "They live in the four elements: the Nymphæ in the element of water, the Sylphes in that of the air, the Pigmies in the earth, and the Salamanders in fire. They are also called Undinæ, Sylvestres, Gnomi, Vulcani, &c. Each species moves only in the element to which it belongs, and neither of them can go out of its appropriate element, which is to them as the air is to us, or the water to fishes; and none of them can live in the element belonging to another class. To each elemental being the element in which it lives is transparent, invisible and respirable, as the atmosphere is to ourselves." (Philosophia Occulta, translated by Franz Hartmann.)

FOR the most comprehensive and lucid exposition of occult pneumatology (the branch of philosophy dealing with spiritual substances) extant, mankind is indebted to Philippus Aureolus Paracelsus (Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim), prince of alchemists and Hermetic philosophers and true possessor of the Royal Secret (the Philosopher's Stone and the Elixir of Life). Paracelsus believed that each of the four primary elements known to the ancients (earth, fire, air, and water) consisted of a subtle, vaporous principle and a gross corporeal substance.

Air is, therefore, twofold in nature-tangible atmosphere and an intangible, volatile substratum which may be termed spiritual air. Fire is visible and invisible, discernible and indiscernible--a spiritual, ethereal flame manifesting through a material, substantial flame. Carrying the analogy further, water consists of a dense fluid and a potential essence of a fluidic nature. Earth has likewise two essential parts--the lower being fixed, terreous, immobile; the higher, rarefied, mobile, and virtual. The general term elements has been applied to the lower, or physical, phases of these four primary principles, and the name elemental essences to their corresponding invisible, spiritual constitutions. Minerals, plants, animals, and men live in a world composed of the gross side of these four elements, and from various combinations of them construct their living organisms.

Paracelsus divided these people of the elements into four distinct groups, which he called gnomes, undines, sylphs, and salamanders. He taught that they were really living entities, many resembling human beings in shape, and inhabiting worlds of their own, unknown to man because his undeveloped senses were incapable of functioning beyond the limitations of the grosser elements.

RELIGION BASED ON FOURTH DIMENSIONAL PHYSICS FOUR BASIC THEMES

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unarius_Academy_of_Science

Unarius is a non-profit organization[1] founded in 1954 in Los Angeles, California[2][3][4][5] and headquartered in El Cajon, California.[6] The organization purports to advance a new "interdimensional science of life" based upon "fourth-dimensional" physics principles.[6][7] It is recorded that in 2003–4 Unarius centers existed in Canada, New Zealand, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and in various locations in the United States.[8][9] Membership figures are unknown.

Saliba summarises Unarian belief under four basic themes: [1] intelligent life on other planets/galaxies; [2] an infinite creative intelligence (God); [3] that human beings are developing into an advanced state of consciousness; [4] the millennial hope of the advent of a landing.[25] According to Unarius, the purpose of the research institution is "to awaken the individual to previous life encounters, the clairvoyant aptitude of the mind, and the reality of one's spiritual connection."[46]

"Three men in bed together: two are sinning,[156] two are sinned against."

"Doesn't that make four men?"

"You're mistaken: the man on either end is implicated once, but the one in the middle does double duty."[157]

SWASTIKA AND BIG DIPPER

http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread1110319/pg1

Then I came across some ingenious information online showing me how you can use the Big Dipper and the North Star in the night sky to determine the season. When the Four Seasons are projected onto the night sky with the North Star in the Center the Big Dipper forms a Swastika, making the symbol a very simple technique to determine the season visually.

THREE V FOUR HEADS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_mythology

It is somewhat ironic that the position of these two in the Proto-Slavic pantheon is unclear, yet the historic accounts written about them are the most extensive. That they were important to all pagan Slavs is indicated by a significant number of toponyms whose names can be associated with them and by discoveries of multi-headed statues in various Slavic lands. Both of these gods were considered supreme in various locations; they were associated with divination and symbolized by the horse. A possibly significant difference is that Svantevit had a white horse while Triglav had a black one, and Svantevit was represented with four heads while Triglav (whose name simply means three-headed) with three. Svantevit was also associated with victory in war, harvest, and commerce.

Various hypotheses about them were proposed: that they are in fact one and the same deity, being somewhat similar; that they are not gods at all but compounds of three or four gods, a kind of mini-pantheons. Slavic neopagans tend to think of Triglav in particular as a concept of Trinity. Svantevit has also been proclaimed as a late West Slavic alternation of Perun or Jarilo, or compared with Svarožič and deemed a solar deity. None of these hypotheses is quite satisfactory, and mostly they are just wild speculation, another attempt to reconstruct Slavic mythology as it should be, rather than discovering what it really was like. Further research is necessary before more can be said of these deities.

SCIENTOLOGY AND THE CROSS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_in_Scientology

Contradicting the Christian concept of Jesus' "atonement of mankind's sins" through his death on the cross, Hubbard states in the Volunteer Ministers Handbook that "Man is basically good, but he could not attain expression of this until now. Nobody but the individual could die for his own sins – to arrange things otherwise was to keep man in chains."[4]

Hubbard is quoted as stating that Christianity evolved from the "R6 Implant": "The man on the cross. There was no Christ! The Roman Catholic Church, through watching the dramatizations of people picked up some little fragments of R6."[9]

Reverend Raymond Guterman of the Northwood Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, Florida, gave a sermon in 2001 titled: "Why Scientology Isn't a Church".[23] "I'm not anti-Scientology; I'm not pro-Scientology. I just don't exactly understand individually why it's called the Church of Scientology and why there would be a cross, even if it's a different cross. When I see the cross, I think of Christ. If Christ is not the center of Scientology, then why would an organization use the cross and call itself a church? I'm just wondering, but I don't really plan to say any of that Sunday," said Reverend Guterman.[23] He explained that in his view Scientology was not a "church" because it did not follow the words of Jesus Christ and accept him as savior, and for this reason said "in my opinion, it's not a church."[23] Scientology representative Pat Harney contacted Reverend Guterman, and told the St. Petersburg Times she thought he was using Scientology in order to generate interest.[23] "There's a definition of 'church' in the dictionary. It's called a congregation. There's a definition of the word 'church' that applies. I understand his Christian perspective. In truth, the derivation of the word 'church' predates Christianity," said Harney.[23] The St. Petersburg Times noted Reverend Guterman's public discussion of Scientology in such a manner was "virtually unheard of" in Clearwater, Florida, due to the large presence of Scientology in the area.[23]

R. Philip Roberts writes in The Apologetics Study Bible (2007): "Scientology makes occasional reference to Jesus Christ in its writings and uses as its symbol a cross with starbursts at each end. But even though it refers to itself as a church and may at times use Christian terminology and symbolism, it is clearly nonbiblical in its view of God, Jesus, Scripture, salvation, and other important doctrines."[6] Roberts goes on to note that "Scientology does not accept the biblical concepts of Jesus as God the Word incarnate. It also places no emphasis on the substitutionary death and resurrection of Jesus. Rather, it views Jesus as a proponent of reincarnation and other Eastern mystical concepts."[6] In his 2007 book The Bible Answer Book for Students, author Hank Hanegraaff writes: "Although the church claims to be compatible with Christianity, the two belief structures – one rooted in science fiction, the other in soteriological fact – are contradictory and can't be harmonized."[27] Hanegraaff explains the nature of the Scientology concepts of auditing, engrams, and thetans, and concludes: "Scientology is a rejection of the biblical doctrines of creation, original sin, and exclusive salvation through Jesus Christ."[27]

FOUR DISCIPLINES

https://www.livescience.com/43296-what-is-stem-education.html

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

THERE WERE FOUR GREAT RELIGIOUS CORPORATIONS IN ROME (quattuor amplissima collegia)- I POSTED A LOT ON THIS AND OTHER STUFF BEFORE (one was augury - augury divided the sky into four parts)- AUGUSTUS WAS A MEMBER OF ALL FOUR COLLEGIA

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_ancient_Roman_religion#auspicia_impetrativa

A collegium ("joined by law"), plural collegia, was any association with a legal personality. The priestly colleges oversaw religious traditions, and until 300 BC only patricians were eligible for membership. When plebeians began to be admitted, the size of the colleges was expanded. By the Late Republic, three collegia wielded greater authority than the others, with a fourth coming to prominence during the reign of Augustus. The four great religious corporations (quattuor amplissima collegia) were:

Pontifices, the College of Pontiffs headed by the Pontifex Maximus;

Augures;

Quindecimviri sacris faciundis, the fifteen priests in charge of the Sibylline Books;

Septemviri epulonum, the board of seven priests who organized public banquets for religious holidays.

Augustus was a member of all four collegia, but limited membership for any other senator to one.[97]

In Roman society, a collegium might also be a trade guild or neighborhood association; see Collegium (ancient Rome).

QUADRANT

REASONED MUST BE AN ENTITY FROM WHICH THE FOUR ELEMENTS EMERGED

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milesian_school

These philosophers defined all things by their quintessential substance (which Aristotle, perhaps being anachronistic,[1] called the ἀρχή / arche)[2] of which the world was formed and which was the source of everything. Thales thought it to be water.[3] But as it was impossible to explain some things (such as fire) as being composed of this element, Anaximander chose an unobserved, undefined element, which he called apeiron[4] (ἄπειρον "having no limit"). He reasoned that if each of the four classical empedoclean elements (water, air, fire, and earth) are opposed to the other three, and if they cancel each other out on contact, none of them could constitute a stable, truly elementary form of matter

The first root was linked to the world of Niflheim, near the spring of Life kept by a serpent or a dragon named Nidhögg.

The second root was linked to the world of Asgard, close to the well of Destiny kept by three Nornes that regulated the fate of humans and gods;

The No symbol applied to the swastika

"thank you for dumping Nazism" icon

In 2005, a controversy was stirred about the question whether the paragraph should be taken to apply to the display of crossed-out swastikas as a symbol of anti-fascism.[13] In late 2005 police raided the offices of the punk rock label and mail order store "Nix Gut Records" and confiscated merchandise depicting crossed-out swastikas and fists smashing swastikas. In 2006 the Stade police department started an inquiry against anti-fascist youths using a placard depicting a person dumping a swastika into a trashcan. The placard was displayed in opposition to the campaign of right-wing nationalist parties for local elections.[14]

On Friday 17 March 2006, a member of the Bundestag, Claudia Roth, reported herself to the German police for displaying a crossed-out swastika in multiple demonstrations against Neo-Nazis, and subsequently got the Bundestag to suspend her immunity from prosecution. She intended to show the absurdity of charging anti-fascists with using fascist symbols: "We don't need prosecution of non-violent young people engaging against right-wing extremism." On 15 March 2007, the Federal Court of Justice of Germany (Bundesgerichtshof) reversed the charge, holding that the crossed-out symbols were "clearly directed against a revival of national-socialist endeavors", thereby settling the dispute for the future.[15][16][17]

Persian King Cyrus the Great conquered Phoenicia in 539 BC. The Persians then divided Phoenicia into four vassal kingdoms: Sidon, Tyre, Arwad, and Byblos. They prospered, furnishing fleets for Persian kings. Phoenician influence declined after this. In 350 or 345 BC, a rebellion in Sidon led by Tennes was crushed by Artaxerxes III. Its destruction was described by Diodorus Siculus.

Within the epic tradition itself, the group of six young protagonists can

be discerned as indicated above. It is quite remarkable to have the

insistence on a set of brothers that we find in both the Ramayana and the

Mahabharata. This connects the four "friendly" brothers in the Ramayana

and even links the "friendly" brothers with the "enemy" brother in the

Mahabharata. It is especially interesting to see that the birth stories differ

considerably. This implies that a structured relationship is the main

message, and that family (which necessarily involves relationship) is a

metaphor to express it.

FOUR MANUSCRIPTS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rune_Poems

The Icelandic Rune Poem is recorded in four Arnamagnæan manuscripts, the oldest of the four dating from the late 15th century.[4] The Icelandic Rune Poem has been called the most systemized of the rune poems (including the Abecedarium Nordmannicum) and has been compared to the ljóðaháttr verse form.[5][6]

IN WORLD WAR II THE CROSS RUNE USED INSTEAD OF CHRISTIAN CROSSES

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algiz

The Yr rune came to be seen as the "life rune" inverted and interpreted as "death rune" (Todesrune) During the World War II era, these two runes (ᛉ for "born", ᛦ for "died") came to be used in obituaries and on tomb stones as marking birth and death dates, replacing asterisk and cross symbols (* for "born", ✝ for "died") conventionally used in this context in Germany.

IT WAS A CROSS FORM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jēran

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Runic_letter_ar.svg

During the last phase of the Elder Futhark, the jēra-rune came to be written as a vertical staff with two slanting strokes in the form of an X in its centre (H-rune.png). As the form of the rune had changed considerably, an older 7th century form of the rune (Long-branch Sol.png) was assumed by the s-rune.[2] When the n-rune had stabilized in its form during the 6th and 7th centuries, its vertical stroke slanted towards the right (Runic letter naudiz.svg), which made it possible to simplify the jēra-rune by having only one vertical stroke that slanted towards the left, giving the ᛅ ár-rune of the Younger Futhark. Since a simpler form of the rune was available for the /a/ phoneme, the older cross form of the rune now came to be used for the /h/ phoneme.[3]

FOUR MANUSCRIPTS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jörð

In Gylfaginning, the first part of the Prose Edda, Jörð is described as one of Odin's sexual partners and the mother of Thor. She is the daughter of Annar and Nótt and half-sister of Auðr and Dagr.[3]

However, scholar Haukur Thorgeirsson points out that the four manuscripts of Gylfaginning vary in their descriptions of the family relations between Nótt, Jörð, Dagr, and Dellingr. In other words, depending on the manuscript, either Jörð or Nótt is the mother of Dagr and partner of Dellingr. Haukur details that "the oldest manuscript, U, offers a version where Jǫrð is the wife of Dellingr and the mother of Dagr while the other manuscripts, R, W and T, cast Nótt in the role of Dellingr's wife and Dagr's mother", and argues that "the version in U came about accidentally when the writer of U or its antecedent shortened a text similar to that in RWT. The results of this accident made their way into the Icelandic poetic tradition".[4]

THE GOD SHANGOS SACRED NUMBER WAS THE NUMBER FOUR- CALLED XANGO- X Quadrant

Shango is known as Xangô in the Candomblé pantheon. Xangô took on strong importance among slaves in Brazil for his qualities of strength, resistance, and aggression. He became the patron orixa of plantations and many Candomblé terreiros. In contrast Oko, the orixá of agriculture, found little favor among slaves in Brazil and has few followers in the Americas. The main bacarrão of Ilê Axé Iyá Nassô Oká, or the terreiro Casa Branca, is dedicated to Xangô.[7][4]

As an example of the kinds of tricks Eshu tries on both humans and orishas, once Orunmila decided to visit the town Owo. He consulted the divining nuts. The palm nuts said he could not know what would happen, so he tried again. Again, “even you cannot know” read the palm nuts. Orunmila was in a hurry, so he left. He met Eshu on the road four times going the other way, once each day of travel. The fourth time, Eshu had taken some kola fruit from a tree and put them on the ground, where Orunmila saw them and ate them.

The farmer whose fruit they were appeared, bush knife in hand, and accused Orunmila of stealing. In the ensuing struggle, Orunmila’s palm was cut. Eshu went into Owo and cut the palm of every man in the city, even the farmer and the Oba, or judge, of Owo. Eshu then told Orunmila that everything would be fine in Owo.

For this reason sacrifices were offered to him in the event of deaths, Hermae, were placed on the graves, and, at oracles and incantations of the dead, he was honoured as belonging to the lower world; in general, he was accounted the intermediary between the upper and lower worlds. His worship early spread through-out the whole of Greece. As he was born in the fourth month, the number four was sacred to him. In Argos the fourth month was named after him, and in Athens he was honoured with sacrifices on the fourth of every month.

His kindliness to man is also shown in his being the god of roads. At cross-roads in particular, there were raised in his honour and called by his name, not only heaps of stones, to which every passer by added a stone, but also the quadrangular pillars known as Hermae (q.v.)

Everyman is then shown to have been crucified so don't think that it's an accident that this crucifixion, they found out that this applied. Somebody somewhere on this planet, back about 600 BC, found some pieces of R6, and I don't know how they found it, either by watching madmen or something, but since that time they have used it and it became what is known as Christianity. The man on the Cross. There was no Christ. But the man on the cross is shown as Everyman.

Autogenes is androgynous, like his Father and Mother. Despite their masculine and feminine names (Father, Mother), each Perfect aeon is a dyad of gender. Together with his Father, Autogenes produces four more aeons named Harmozel, Oroiael, Daveithai and Eleleth. The four aeons are helpers for Autogenes. Each of the four aeon helpers creates three more aeons. Harmozel emanates Grace, Truth and Form. Oroiael emanates Conception, Perception and Memory. Daveithai emanates Understanding, Love and Idea. Eleleth emanates Perfection, Peace and Wisdom – also named Sophia.

All four light aeons and their three serve Autogenes. These are the original aeons, the angels. In addition, four other beings dwelled with the luminaries (the aeons/angels). Pigera (or Adamas, the perfect being or Cosmic Man) lived with Harmozel. Seth (the son of Adamas) lived with Oroiael. Posterity of Seth (the souls of holy people) lived with Daveithai. Finally, the Souls (those that have yet to attain gnosis) lived with Eleleth.

ORPHIC QUATERNITY WITH ZEUS

http://opsopaus.com/OM/BA/AGEDE/Water.html

Jung has shown us that Gods often form quaternities with a 3+1 structure, such as we see here. Zeus's three wives are the Maiden, Mother and Crone. He is the fourth, who differs from the three. According to Empedocles, Zeus, Persephone and Demeter correspond to Air, Water and Earth, respectively. This suggests that Rhea corresponds to Fire in this structure, which makes some sense. Rhea, as Goddess of Nature, is the agent of change (indeed She arranged the threefold mating of Zeus), and philosophers, magicians and alchemists, from Heraclitus in the fifth century BCE to those in our own time, have identified Fire as the primary agent of change. (See our discussion of Fire.) Therefore the quaternity has the Sky Father Zeus above and the Earth Mother Demeter below; Persephone the Maiden of the Abyss is on one side, and Rhea the Celestial Crone is on the other.

Most cathedrals are laid out like a cross. If you imagine the rather grisly image of someone hanging on that shape, the nave is the long bottom part of the vertical line, the bottom of the body. As you walk down the nave toward the high altar at the other end of the cathedral, the labyrinth is at the thighs, and when you come to the outstretched arms, this vertical line is the transept. Where the head would be is the choir and the high altar.

“So it is no wonder that the ancient cooks were au fait in sacrificial rites; they presided, for instance, at weddings and festivals. Hence Menander, in his Flatterer, makes the cook on duty at the fourth-day club-feast (Tetradistai) or the day of Aphrodite Pandemos, speaks as follow: ‘Libation! Round with the tripe! Mind what you do. Come Sosias, boy, libation! Good for you! And now pour out. To all above we will pray both Gods and Goddesses (take the tongue), and may Life, Health, and many a blessing come of this, and those we’ve got Heaven grant we never miss!”

Athenaios 14. 659D, describing a private celebration of the Tetradistai in Aphrodite’s honor.

“But take care to avoid troubles which eat out the heart on the fourth of the beginning and ending of the month; it is a sacred day: especially during these sacred days it is convenient to get rid of all the activities that make you suffer, which, if at other times you need to choose them as necessary, in these days you should not.“

The fourth day is also a suitable day for marriage.

THE IONIANS AND THE ATHENIANS WERE DIVIDED INTO FOUR TRIBES

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attic_calendar

As Ionians, the Athenians had always been divided into four tribes. Although the tribes were never abolished, one of the key reforms at the creation of democracy after 506 BC was to distribute citizens under a new system of ten tribes to try to ensure even participation across the whole community. From then on, ten became a kind of hallmark number for the democracy, as so much citizen activity was done through the ten tribes. (For instance, the 10 generals leading the 10 regiments, the 10 sets of public arbitrators, the 10 treasurers of the Delian league and so on.)

FOUR HEADED STATUE

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_mythology

The third, and arguably the most important, record comes from the Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus, who in his Gesta Danorum described the war fought in 1168 by the Danish king Valdemar I against the Wends of Rügen, the conquest of their city at cape Arkona and the destruction of the grand temple of Svantevit that stood there. Saxo meticulously described the worship of Svantevit, the customs associated with it and the tall four-headed statue of the god. He also mentioned multi-headed deities of other Slavic tribes; Rugievit, Porewit and Porentius.

The fourth major source is three biographies of the German warrior-bishop St Otto, who in the early 12th century led several military-pastoral expeditions into the regions of Slavic tribes living near the Baltic Sea. According to the manuscript, the most important Slavic deity was Triglav, whose temples in the city of Szczecin were respected oracles. In the cities of Wolgast and Havelberg, the war god Gerovit was worshiped, a likely corruption of Jarovit, a Slavic deity possibly identical to Jarilo of the East Slavic folklore.

Though considered authentic by some Slavic neopagans, the Book of Veles appears to be a forgery from the first half of the twentieth century.

Archaeological remains[edit]

The Zbruch Idol

Statues of several Slavic deities were discovered in 1848. On the banks of the Zbruch river, a tall stone statue was found, with four faces under a single stone hat. Because of its similarity to Saxo's description of the great image in the temple of Rügen, the statue was immediately proclaimed a representation of Svantevit, although it was clear it could not be the original Svantevit of Rügen. Several other multi-headed statues were discovered elsewhere. A tiny four-headed statue from the 10th century, carved out of bone, was unearthed among the ruins of Preslav, a capital of medieval Bulgarian tsars. A two-headed, human-sized wooden statue was discovered on an island in the Tollensesee lake near Neubrandenburg: in the Middle Ages, this was the land of the Slavic Dolenain tribe, whose name survives in the name of the lake. Furthermore, a three-headed statue was discovered in Dalmatia (Croatia) on the hill bearing the name of Suvid, not far from the peak of Mt. Dinara called Troglav.

QUATERNITY

http://opsopaus.com/OM/BA/MM.html

Zeus and the Triple Goddess form an Elemental Quaternity, which helps us understand their relation. Zeus the Sky Father, as we’ve seen, governs the Air, and Persephone the Abyssal Maiden governs Water. Demeter the Earth Mother is clearly Earth. This leaves Rhea the Celestial Crone to correspond to Fire. Rhea, Demeter, Persephone, and Zeus define an ascending Rotation of the Elements. She says that the gods, like the goddesses, have their unique characters from their positions in the cycle of Elements.

GREEK QUATERNITY

http://opsopaus.com/OM/BA/MM.html

So apparently her seat is not by the blue Cocytus, the River of Lamentation, associated with Water, where we would expect to find it, but by the fiery Pyriphlegethon. She is there with Hecate, who is called Purphoros (Fire-bearing), Daidoukhos (Torch-bearer), Phôsphoros (Light-bearer), and Puripnon (Fire-breather). Aside from being associated with the opposed Elements Fire and Water, they may be opposed in the sense that Persephone is more concerned with dissolution and Hecate with reconstitution, for Hecate witnessed the Maiden’s abduction and negotiated her return.

These Goddesses are part of another Elemental Quaternity, for Hecate (Fire), Demeter (Earth), and Persephone (Water) were associated in worship and magic (Kingsley, pp. 243–5, 270–1). The Hidden Fourth is Dionysos (Air). Hecate, who is also called Phulada (Guardian), Propulaia (Before the Gates), Kleidophoros (Key-bearer) and Kleidoukhos (Key-holder, Priestess), opens the way into an Ascending Rotation of the Elements, which follow her in three generations (Demeter, Persephone, Dionysos).

EMPEDOCLES FOURFOLD ROOTS OF EVERYTHING- FOUR GODS HOLD WORLD TOGETHER

http://opsopaus.com/OM/BA/MM.html

II. Empedocles’ Roots

To understand Persephone and her role in the Alchemical Rotation, we begin with a familiar text from Empedocles, a fifth century BCE Pythagorean philosopher, spiritual teacher, magos (magician-priest), iatromantis (healer-seer, “shaman”), and theios anêr (“divine man”). He wrote,

Now hear the fourfold Roots of everything:

Enlivening Hera, Hades, shining Zeus,

And Nêstis, moistening mortal springs with tears. (DK 31B6)

These Roots (Rhizai) are the four Elements (Fire, Air, Water, Earth), which Empedocles discovered, each being the manifestation of a deity. (I capitalize the names of these spiritual Elements to distinguish them from ordinary fire, air, water, and earth.) Of particular interest to us is Nêstis (“Fasting”), an obscure name by which the Maiden was known in Sicily, whence came Empedocles’ Pythagorean practice, which had many affinities with the worship of the Two Goddesses (the Mother and Maiden). The text clearly associates her with Water, and in particular with subterranean streams and springs, which emerge from the earth and often re-descend; Simplicius, the sixth-century CE Neoplatonic philosopher, derives her name from naein (to flow). However, the correspondence between the other deities and the Elements has been controversial since ancient times. It is likely that this is intentional and that Empedocles, like many spiritual masters, taught in riddles (ainigmata) in order to exercise his students’ minds (analogous to Zen koans). For example, the ancient Stoics said that “shining Zeus” is Fire, for he is Lord of the Lightening Bolt, Hades is Earth because he rules the Underworld, and that Hera is Air because she is the wife of Zeus and in ancient Greek the letters of her name can be rearranged into the word for Air (ΗΡΑ, ΑΗΡ). A pretty compelling case, for sure.

We will get to the Rotation later; for now the important point is that we can proceed with Kingsley’s correspondences, but we should keep in mind that all the possible arrangements have their lessons and their uses. Nevertheless, we can worry too much about correspondences, for the Goddess says:

I am alive down here.

That is the Mystery.

We are joined —

all four of us Gods —

to hold the World together. (A19)

FOUR RIVERS UNDERWORLD

http://opsopaus.com/OM/BA/MM.html

I asked the Goddess about the Four Rivers of the Underworld enumerated in Plato’s Phaedo according to Orphic doctrine: Pyriphlegethon (Fire), Acheron (Air), Cocytus (Water), and Styx (Earth), according to Damascius’ correspondences (Kern, Orph. Frag. 125); she replied:

There are Four Rivers.

Behold them coming from the Roots of the Tree.

They nourish the Four Corners of the Earth,

each in its own way.

How is that? By the Elements,

but they all go everywhere,

not to particular geographical quarters.

It is all spiritual.

This is the realm below matter,

on the other side of matter. (B9)

I understand this to mean that although each river is associated with an Element, and the rivers flow off to the four quarters, we should not think of each Element going in just one direction. Rather, because this is a spiritual process, the Four Corners of the Earth should be interpreted non-materially; the Rivers and the Elements reach everywhere. There is also the interesting idea here that the Underworld is the “other side of matter.”

In connection with the Rivers the Goddess made a surprising assertion:

Tell them the structure: the Four Rivers.

I sit by one. It is Pyriphlegethon.

“Isn’t that Fire?” I asked.

It is, but I am there with Hecate. (A16)

We are Fire and Water.

So we are the Opposites who are not opposites.

This you must tell them.

We work together to bring about change. (A17)

PLUTARCH EGYPTIAN GODS AND THE ELEMENTS THE FOUR LETTER NAME AND THE TAROT CARDS

http://opsopaus.com/OM/BA/AGEDE/Air.html

Dionysos, the son of Zeus and in many ways a second Zeus (and destined to succeed Him), was associated with Air by Proclus, a Pagan philosopher of the fifth century CE. We can understand this as follows. The principal Gods in the Mysteries and in the Pythagorean Tradition are Dionysos and the Trinity of Persephone, Demeter and Hekate. We have seen (in Water and Earth) that Persephone and Demeter correspond to Water and Earth, respectively, and we will see that Hekate corresponds to Fire, which leaves Air for Dionysos, as for His father. (Compare also the Orphic Quaternity discussed in "Water.") Similarly, Plutarch equates Dionysos (Air) with Osiris, Earth with Isis, Water with Nephthys, and Fire with Typhon. The assignment of Air to both Zeus and Dionysos may seem troublesome, but it reveals a mystery, for it will come to pass that Dionysos, the "Higher Zeus," is assigned to Aithêr, the "Higher Air" or Fifth Essence.

A fundamental principle of Greek philosophy and alchemy is that a Conjunction of Opposites requires some mediating factor, a mean to unite the extremes. Air is an important mediating Element because it unites the opposites Fire and Water, the key alchemical process (discussed with Fire). Here I will simply observe that Air can mediate between them because it has Warmth in common with Fire and Moisture in common with Water, so it forms a bridge between them. This mediating role is also central to the process of emanation represented by the Tarot court cards (King, Queen, Knight, Page), and symbolized by IOUE, the name of Jove: Air represents the Union of the Impulse (Fire) with its Object (Water), which leads to the Effect (Earth). (Earth is the other mediating element; the mediating or mixed elements have crossbars in their signs.)

FOURFOLD SYSTEM

https://archive.org/stream/TenGodsANewApproachToDefiningTheMythologicalStructuresOfTheIndoEuropeans/ten_gods_a_new_approach_to_defining_the_mythological_structures_of_the_Indo_Europeans_djvu.txt

As regards space, there is evidence of an Indo-European fourfold

system of the world quarters related to the body quarters (Mallory and

Adams 2006, 293-94). Attention is also paid to a vertical division of the

cosmos into three or four levels which were seen to relate to sections of

the upright human body, starting from the head, which corresponded to the

sky (Lincoln 1986, 141-46). The problems raised by the apparent conflict

between three-part and four-part divisions are discussed at various points

in this book.

The commonly found equation of the cosmic level of earth with the

female is accepted here, and the gender difference between it and the

remaining components in the otherwise all-male system of cosmic levels

appears to be one of the factors that has led to the varying treatment of the

sequences. The colour triad of white, red, and black tied to Dumezil's

three functions has been well established (Allen 1998, 165-66), and a

fourth colour, yellow, clearly present in the Indian materials, can be

related to the female.

As regards time, we can say that this cosmology is unlike that of

equatorial peoples who note the passage of the sun overhead. It takes

account of the solstices and, to a lesser degree, of the equinoctial points

that lie between them, which gives a fourfold system; and there is another

way of dividing the year into four, which is particularly prominent in the

Celtic calendar, with divisions falling at the half-way points between those

in the solstice series, so creating an overall division into eight (Lyle 2009).

The calendar is one of the victims of the dispersal of information and an

overall view of the Indo-European structure does not seem to have been

offered in recent years. From the point of view of this study, the main

importance of the calendar is as a mnemonic device, and this has

determined the features to be discussed.

AGE GRADE SYSTEM FOUR PERIODS OF LIFE

https://archive.org/stream/TenGodsANewApproachToDefiningTheMythologicalStructuresOfTheIndoEuropeans/ten_gods_a_new_approach_to_defining_the_mythological_structures_of_the_Indo_Europeans_djvu.txt

The human life cycle is another member of the homologous temporal

sets and, in the age-grade system explored in the next chapter, there are

four equal periods of life corresponding to the seasons, each of which is

composed of "right-hand" and "left-hand" halves that correspond to the

light and dark half-seasons. Since the proposed system was not just a

spatiotemporal one, but had a social dimension as well, storage of

information would have been secured at the level of the groups of people

who enacted their parts in the overall ritual pattern.

MASSAI FOURFOLD

https://archive.org/stream/TenGodsANewApproachToDefiningTheMythologicalStructuresOfTheIndoEuropeans/ten_gods_a_new_approach_to_defining_the_mythological_structures_of_the_Indo_Europeans_djvu.txt

The same triad is also applicable conceptually to the Maasai whose

three recognized life stages are young men, elders, and senior elders. The

total age-grade series among the Maasai, however, contains four grades

(Bernardi 1985, 48-49). The first grade is that of the moran, the unmarried

young men, devoted to military and herding activity; the second and third

grades are those of the elders, devoted respectively to family and

economic activity and to political activity; and the fourth grade is that of

the senior elders, devoted to religious ritual. All the classes that work their

way through the system make the transition to the next of the four grades

at the same time, each moving up one place. The threefold and fourfold

sets are illustrated in Figure 2-1.

ROMAN CIRCUS FOUR FACTIONS FOUR COLOR PATTERN GENERATIONS

https://archive.org/stream/TenGodsANewApproachToDefiningTheMythologicalStructuresOfTheIndoEuropeans/ten_gods_a_new_approach_to_defining_the_mythological_structures_of_the_Indo_Europeans_djvu.txt

two generations (48 years), but it seems that it is only when weight has

been given to all four of the colour components over four generations (96

years) that the cycle is complete (cf. James 2008, 91-92), so allowing the

age-grade structure to follow the same four-generation pattern as the

shallow lineage discussed below.

The Roman circus was understood to represent the cosmos and four

factions were identified by the four cosmic colours that were worn by the

charioteers. These colours fall into two pairs with a dominant and

subordinate partner in each case but, as discussed in the next chapter, the

dominant and subordinate roles may have been reversed in the circus

context. Here the colours are presented as in the model with dominant

white paired with blue (dark blue being equivalent to black), and dominant

red paired with green, corresponding to yellow (Lyle 1990a, 35—47),

although, of course, in the circus case they are simply the colours of the

chariot-racing factions and are not explicitly tied to generations. We can

start with the two dominant colours, white and red, and then, to keep up

the alternation, we would have black/blue (subordinate partner of white)

and yellow/green (subordinate partner of red) as shown in Table 2-3.

FOUR GENERATION CAPSULE

https://archive.org/stream/TenGodsANewApproachToDefiningTheMythologicalStructuresOfTheIndoEuropeans/ten_gods_a_new_approach_to_defining_the_mythological_structures_of_the_Indo_Europeans_djvu.txt

In terms of Greek myth, the

four generations are those of (1) Gaia, (2) her son Uranus, (3) their son

Cronus, and (4) Cronus's son Zeus. The structure elicited here is in

40

Chapter Four

keeping with the idea that the creation of the world through the emergence

of the gods is not only a theogony but a "cratogony", as Jan Assmann has

called the creation sequence in the Egyptian context (2008, 61): that is to

say that it is a power structure legitimizing kingship. The claim being

made here is that the structure of the proposed four-generation pantheon is

the charter for a system by which the king was selected from alternate

halves of the society in each generation.

The four-generation capsule

I have called the Indo-European block of four generations a "capsule"

to emphasize its isolation as a separate entity. This block is quite evident

in several contexts, including Greece. Lin Foxhall (1995, 134) draws

attention to its significance there, saying:

Though the angkhisteia is "horizontally" expressed as kinship out to

second cousins, "vertically" in time it is those who share great-

grandparents. The youngest members are three generations removed from a

common ancestral couple whom they probably never knew personally,

though their parents most likely did. ... The limits of the angkhisteia

become symbolically significant as the temporal and social limits for most

of the privileges and responsibilities of kinship.

Foxhall (135) has proposed calling this temporal block "human time"

as opposed to the "monumental time" that lies outside it, and has

demonstrated the important difference between the two in relation to

memory. A study of Irish and Welsh kinship by T. M. Charles-Edwards

(1993, 55, 187, 213-14, 471-72) concludes that there was a Common

Celtic kinship unit of the "true kindred" consisting of a descent group of

four adult generations which corresponds to the Greek angkhisteia.

The similar Indian sapinda system specifically contrasts the current

generation, which contains the sacrificer, with the preceding three

generations of the dead. 33 The pinda is a ball of rice, and a man offers

three pindas, one each to his deceased father, grandfather, and great-

grandfather. After that cut-off point, the ancestors are not ritually

remembered.

The historically attested four-generation block clearly provides a good

base for cross-cultural comparison within the Indo-European area, but

these patrilineal blocks do not give scope for alternate succession. In the

four-generation block suggested for prehistory, it is an ancestress who

plays the role of founder, 34 and study of an instance outside the Indo-

European area, the matrilineal Asante of West Africa, has been

The Four-Generation Capsule and Royal Succession

41

particularly illuminating for understanding the principles of royal

succession.

The principles of royal succession

The kinship and succession system of the Asante includes the

following relevant features: a shallow lineage with an apical ancestress;

eligibility to be king determined by membership in a particular

matrilineage; and cross-cousin marriage as a factor in dynastic succession.

Although the Asante royal line has an extended lineage, the whole

lineage concept in the society is patterned on the lineage segment of

shallow depth discussed by Meyer Fortes (1950, 258), who says, "This

segment, sometimes described as the children of one womb (yafunu),

generally consists of the uterine descendants of an ancestress not more

than four, or occasionally five, generations antecedent to its living adult

members." Elsewhere (277) he says that four generations "is about the

maximum extension of a descent line over which all the progeny of a man

or a woman can remain united either under his or her authority (as

sometimes happens in a matrilineal household) or through living contact

with him or her", and that "four adult generations (the equivalent of five

generations inclusive of children) embrace people of common descent

strongly united by kinship sentiment focused on a progenitor or

progenetrix who was the parent or grand-parent of its oldest members".

There is a good deal of evidence worldwide for the importance of the

shallow lineage, so that the existence of a four-generation lineage among

the Indo-Europeans would not be unexpected.

As regards succession to the Asante kingship, only men belonging to a

particular matrilineage were eligible as candidates for the kingship, and

one man from the set of those eligible became king by marrying a woman

in another matrilineage who was descended from the line of queens. A

tight form of kinship structure that would allow both halves of the double

requirement to be met within the same family is cross-cousin marriage,

and this was common among the Asante. Dynastic succession is always

complex where there is an element of choice, and, for full understanding,

the Asante case would have to be studied in a broad historical and

symbolic context, but it can be noted here that T. C. McCaskie (1995, 173)

concludes that a candidate for Asante kingship, as well as being

"necessarily royal in terms of matriliny", was ideally the paternal grandson

of a former king and that there was a "social understanding that cross-

cousin marriage offered the most propitious opportunity" for supplying a

candidate qualified in this way. This would involve alternate kingship.

42

Chapter Four

Although the succession is matrilineal and gives a certain weight to the

female, the rule of succession mainly serves to keep the balance between

the men in two patrilines.

The conditions for succession can be summarized in the following

way. Only men belonging to a particular matrilineage were eligible as

candidates for the kingship, and one man from the set of those eligible

became king by marrying a woman in another matrilineage who was

descended from the line of queens. Considered historically, it can be seen

that it is quite likely that one or other half of this double requirement might

survive without the other, so that we might expect to find instances where

a king was drawn from a specific lineage without being required to marry

into another specific line or, alternatively, where a man became king by

being selected for marriage into the line of queens without belonging to a

designated lineage, as in the case of Pelops discussed in the last chapter. In

heroic Greece, succession by means of marriage into the royal female line

seems to be indicated more generally, without there being any cross-

cousin marriage arrangement, although a case can also be made in the

Greek context for this form of marriage sometimes being important for

succession. 35

By the time that there is direct historical evidence available in Greece,

the line of queens is only a memory, but it has long been realized that

Hittite historical evidence from the second millennium BCE indicates that

the queen, called Tawananna, had a central role that was suggestive of

matriliny. The evidence as interpreted by Margalit Finkelberg reveals a

royal house with a line of queens in which each successive queen is

married by her uncle, her mother's brother (2005, 71-79). This gives a line

of women who are both queens and the mothers of queens, and two male

lines marrying into it, which is an even tighter system than the cross-

cousin-marriage model discussed here, and could be a specific Hittite

modification which has retained the important feature of alternate

succession within a royal house.

Marija Gimbutas related to the Indo-European materials in such a way

that all the evidence of matrilineal succession within the Indo-European

area was declared to be from an Old European substratum, and she argued

that there was a collision of cultures when the patrilineal mode of

succession came in. 36 This is an invasion scenario which study of the

cosmology does not support in so far as the question of succession is

concerned. There were changes, certainly, but ones that could have

evolved within the same culture.

The Indo-European kinship terminology has been taken to imply a

patrilineal bias, but there are some promising recent developments that

The Four-Generation Capsule and Royal Succession

43

seem to offer greater flexibility, and it may be that links will be made in

the future between kinship terms and cosmology. For example, Sergey

Kullanda (2002) argues on linguistic grounds that "patriarchal clan society

was not the earliest form of Indo-European social organization as has been

believed, and that the latter seems to have been based on age-sex

stratification". Also, Allen, in outlining the forces and patterns that may

have been at work in kinship organization in the remote past of humankind

(1989, 2000, 2008), has strongly emphasized generation alternations in a

way that may be illuminating in relation to the cosmological model where

these form an important part of the system. There is also a growing

awareness of the switching that is possible between kinship systems over

the course of time (Godelier et al., 1998).

If a matrilineal form of succession paid attention to patrilines, a shift to

exclusively patrilineal succession could have been made quite easily.

When temporal awareness developed and received the support of writing,

so that there was more and more "history", the lineages of remembered

kings would have been extended and the link between the patrilines

through an ancestress would have been broken, leaving the originating

female to be remembered only at the level of the gods.

The places of the gods in the four-generation capsule

The king's unique position within the society would have been

buttressed by projecting back from him over several generations to an

apical source and, with alternate lines of kings, both of the related royal

lines were able to draw legitimacy from an ancestress three generations

before the king. 37 It is proposed here that ten key members of the royal

house corresponded to the gods in the theogony. It may well be that these

people in the royal lineages were regarded as qualitatively different beings

from the rest of the community (Helms 1998, 5), and, at any rate, we can

say that the gods in a system like this were not remote, but had

counterparts among the living and the recent dead.

The relationships in the model are illustrated in Figure 4-1. The king

(ego) is a young adult. In the previous generation are his father (F) and the

mother's brother (MB) who was king before him. In the generation before

that is his father's father (FF) who was the king before his mother's

brother. The king and his grandfather belong to one line (say, white) while

his mother's brother belongs to the other line (say, red). The key people in

this group are the king (ego), his father (F), his mother's brother (MB), his

father's father (FF) and his mother's mother's mother (MMM). There are

four key people in the generations before the king.

HAUSA THREE OR FOUR DIRECTIONS

The word "gods" is used here with reference both to the male gods and

to the female gods spoken of as goddesses, and it is especially crucial to

consider the placing of the goddesses in the structure since the female has

not been obvious in sequences concerned with the male stages of life.

Although the male receives more detailed categorization, the total concept

of the cosmogony is androgynous, and we are dealing with a gendered

universe (Eliade 1971, 34-42). At a basic level, the triad so often referred

to is the male genitalia of penis and testicles and at that level the female is

the vulva. Associations between the genitalia and the world quarters are

explicitly present in a Hausa naming ritual where a boy and a girl have

placed before them heaps of ashes in either three or four directions. 48

https://archive.org/stream/TenGodsANewApproachToDefiningTheMythologicalStructuresOfTheIndoEuropeans/ten_gods_a_new_approach_to_defining_the_mythological_structures_of_the_Indo_Europeans_djvu.txt

An interesting spatiotemporal interpretation of the Hindu calendar of

Nepal by Marc Gaborieau (1982) suggests a means of approaching the

year that is helpful in relation to the world ages. Working with a six-

season calendar, Gaborieau offers a diagrammatic representation (25)

showing the year circling round on the horizontal plane for the first four

seasons of winter, frosts, spring, and summer, and then moving into the

vertical dimension for the seasons of the rains (down) and autumn (up).

However, with the concept of each segment between transitions being on a

different level in mind, the idea that the year circles round on the

horizontal plane is less compelling than the idea that, at each transition

point in the circle, it takes a step down and so would reach a point at the

bottom by gradations. The return to the top could be envisaged as the

whole cosmos turning upside down so that the bottom becomes the new

top or as a swift vertical movement from bottom to top, as indicated for

the four-season year in Figure 5-1. Since the year begins at the winter

solstice, the return to the top comes half-way through the winter season.

Chapter Four

If there were bilateral cross-cousin marriage, the king's wife (W)

would be his mother's brother's daughter, and would ideally be a daughter

of his predecessor in the kingship. Figure 4-1 presents the four-generation

block with the descent and marriage connections of sixteen people, seven

of whom correspond to gods. These are the six already discussed, and in

addition a brother of the queen who carries the line of succession, as

discussed below.

The two matrilines are those of the ancestress (MMM/FFM) and the

queen (W) and the two patrilines are those that supply the white king and

the red king. It should be remembered that what is represented in the

figure is simply a four-generation segment of a continuous process.

Whichever generation is in power, the ancestress is three generations

before it. The only difference is that there may be either a white or a red

king and an adjustment has to be made when moving from one to the

other.

The current successor in the latent line is a brother of the queen who is

the husband of the king's sister (WB/ZH). He will be the father of the next

king. The queen's divine counterpart, the sun goddess, has twin brothers

(the Dioskouroi), who are respectively second-function and third-function

figures (see below). The queen's brother who carries the royal succession

corresponds to the third-function twin relating to fertility, and she has

another brother (WB) who wins fame in battle and corresponds to the

second- function twin. The queen and her two brothers relate to three of the

four young gods who are the counterparts of the four old gods of the

cosmic levels, and a brother of the king (B) is taken to be the fourth

member of the set, who relates to the first-function young god.

HESIOD REALLY FOUR AGES

The world ages and Yima's seed-store

In the Works and Days (lines 109-201) Hesiod gives five ages, of

which the fourth, the Age of Heroes, is very different in kind from the

others, and looks like an interpolation into a fourfold set that consisted of

the Age of Gold, the Age of Silver, the Age of Bronze, and the Age of Iron

(Most 2006-7, 1:96-105). The ages are embedded in correspondences. In

Plato's Republic, for example, there is reference to a myth according to

which some men (rulers) are of gold, and some men (guardians) are of

silver, while the rest of the people are of iron and bronze, and Plato also

has the vertical body image, mentioned again later in this chapter,

according to which gold would equal head, silver the upper body, and iron

and bronze the lower body. 40 The system is a spatiotemporal one and also

includes social categories.

The

seasons run from midwinter, and occur in hierarchical order with links to,

first, the brahmanas (priests); next the ksatriyas (warriors); and then the

vaisyas (cultivators/herders). This match with the varnas allows us to

transfer across to a fourfold system in Indian philosophy where three of

the world quarters (with a starting-point in the east) are related in a

hierarchical sequence to the brahmanas, ksatriyas and vaisyas, while the

fourth quarter (the north) is outside this sequence and relates to the

"other", which contains ideas of death (as in connections with an extra

class of sudras who ritually represent the ancestors) as well as ideas of

totality. 45 This pattern gives a quarter of the whole to the ancestors, and so

does an alternative non-hierarchical Indian treatment of the world

directions in which "the South represents the world of the deceased"

(Bodewitz 2000, 23).

Every Bororo village should be composed of eight clans, arranged in a

circle around a central plaza and a men's house. Each clan has a specified

position in the village circle — its unique spatial identity — for the circle is

bisected by an east-west axis that divides the village into two halves. Each

half, or moiety, includes four clans and is characterised by a name

(Tugarege and Exerae) and certain social and symbolic attributes.

Perseus deployed only four cavalry squadrons and four infantry cohorts, and engaged the Roman detachment.

Macedon was to be divided into four republics, each with its own council which would have to pay Rome a tribute which was half of what used to be paid to the king. The same regulations applied to Illyria. More definite arrangements were to be made by the commissioners.[90]

When the commission arrived from Rome Aemilius gave notice for the representatives of all the cites to assemble at Amphipolis and bring all the documents they had and all the money due to the Royal treasury. A conference was held and there was such a display of pomp and power that Livy wrote that it “might have even appalled the allies of Rome.” It was declared that the Macedonians were to be free and retain their fields and cites and elect their officials. Then the partition, the borders of the four cantons and the tribute were announced. Aemilius designated the four capitals. Intermarriage between people of different cantons and the possession of houses or land in more than one canton were banned. The gold and silver mines were not allowed to be mined, but the iron and copper ones were. Importation of salt and cutting of wood for domestic shipbuilding or allowing others to do so were forbidden. The cantons bordering other nations were allowed to have border troops

Rome's victory ended the Antigonid dynasty and brought an effective end to the independence of the Hellenistic kingdom of Macedon, although formal annexation was still some years away. The kingdom was divided into four client republics, each subservient to Rome. Roman prestige and authority in Greece was greatly increased as a result.

FOURTH TRANSCENDENT GENERATION OF GOD

Fourth generation of God

http://www.ancientgreekbattles.net/Pages/90099_Gods.htm

It has been argued that even though Hesiod's story ends with the Olympian Gods, a fourth generation takes place. In short, instead of an offspring of Zeus' finally overthrowing his father. The end of the third generation is done when Zeus 'decides' to 'merge' (destroy?) with all the Olympic Gods, to become one God, The God.

TETRAHEDRAL UFO

http://motls.blogspot.com.es/2009/12/tetrahedral-kremlin-ufo.html

The alleged tetrahedral UFO reminds me of Richard Hoagland's hyperdimensional theory, in which energy is supposedly released at the point of the corner of tetrahedron inscribed in a rotating sphere. While engaged in numerological speculations related to the Face on Mars, Hoagland noted that most planets in the solar system have a geological feature at or near this tetrahedral latitude of 19.5 degrees, eg Red Spot on Jupiter, Mons Olympus on Mars

BARBURY CASTLE FORMATION CROP CIRCLE JOSEPH CAMPBELL AND THE TETRAKTYS

https://stigdragholm.wordpress.com/signs-and-miracles/iv/decoding-of-mother-of-all-crop-circles-and-jerusalem-ufo/

According to Joseph Campbell, the tetraktys represents creation in four steps. The one creative source (top dot) becomes two dots, representing duality — male/female, sun/moon, plus/minus, light/dark, rational/intuitive, etc. The row with three dots shows the relative balance of the dual forces — female dominant, balanced, or male dominant. The row of four dots at the bottom indicates “all things created” from the three above — the four quarters of the Earth, the four quarters of Heaven, the four elements, the four fundamental forces, etc.

Note that the ten dots of the Tetraktys fit well with certain key points of the 1991 Barbury Castle formation (Image 15).

“There was an additional clue in the Barbury Castle formation, in the date it appeared, July 17, 1991. Look up Genesis 8:4 and find that the Ark landed on the mountains of Ararat on the 17th day of the 7th month (Stig: To save the world from the Great Flood!). This seems to be an additional clue that the Age of Pisces is ending, and that Aquarius is near, or perhaps already begun”.

“Here we can see that by gradually clipping out different sections, this image clearly outlines the shape of a four-sided pyramid, or a tetrahedron. Mathematically, this is the simplest three-dimensional shape that can be made.” and “the tetrahedron is the organizing energy that forms the fourth dimension, which we now appear to be heading into”.

“In short, through this geometric ordering, you can actually see the energy that you are working with. It appears that this was part of the plan that the One Mind of God originally had for us”.

“Thus, the tetrahedron, with all of its symbolic trimmings, illustrates the fourth dimension as being the “Kingdom of the Father ” that was promised in the Bible as coming to replace the current “heaven and earth” that we have right now”.

“So, what we have in the outer circles is a geometric progression of the first, second and third dimensions, illustrated for us in a field of wheat. The fourth dimension is the focal point of the entire formation, represented by the tetrahedron within the sphere in the center”.

“The fact that the three outer circles all add up to the inner circle must also indicate that this fourth dimension is the summation of all that had occurred before it”.

FOUR WARS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Macedonia_(ancient_kingdom)

Alexander I's successor Perdicas II (r. 454–413 BC) was not only saddled with internal revolt by the petty kings of Upper Macedonia, but also faced serious challenges to Macedonian territorial integrity by Sitalces, a ruler in Thrace, and the Athenians, who fought four separate wars against Macedonia under Perdiccas II.

FOUR REPUBLICS

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Pydna

The Macedonian kingdom was dissolved, its government replaced with four republics which were heavily restricted from intercourse or trade with one another. In time, these were also dissolved, and Macedonia became a Roman province. In 167 BC, Paullus received orders to attack Epirus, resulting in the enslavement of 15,000 Epirotes. This took place despite the fact that Epirus had not aided Perseus in the war.
